The only reason to even consider getting this would be for the scaled UI because judging from the picture it's the only feature that mods do not already offer.

IWDEE is really good but it does offer a lot more. I'm not saying they should introduce kits and BG2 rules in PST but I find it hard to justify picking this up if the only thing it does is adding some zooming in (which I personally don't care for) and a scaled UI (which does look like a good thing).

Am I missing something?

Muad.406: Even if the EE is good i feel strongly against pulling a game off the store just because a new more expensive version is out.
avatar
eiii: You will not have to pull the original version from sale when you do trust in your own work. Obviously they do not trust in it.
Exactly. We all know that the classic editions were outselling their EE games. If their products are so great, as many here seem to argue, than why that was the case, huh?

Instand loading times are also promised. And I guess CPU performance consumption will be tuned as well as in the other EEs...

Sorry to play the advocatus diaboli, but I´d suggest due to the enormous discounts...
...one who just wanted to buy a few of the D&Ds ends up buying all of them in one of the UltraAwesomeSales.

I'm sure this has been asked elsewhere, but I don't understand why they don't create some new content for the same setting rather than remake old games?

Some remakes do make sense in order to make a brilliant game more approachable for a new generation (for example X-COM), but the Infinity engine has, in my nostalgia-driven opinion, held up decent compared to many others, so in this case the originals are still quite playable.

Are the sales from a remake really so high that it is worthwhile to do, or do they not trust their own designing skills and therefore re-use old intellectual property?

Actually, they did with BG and that is why you are finding all this hate here. They also want to make a BG3.

For the other games (ICWD and eventually Planescape Torment) , they did something more "decent" like the works done with Lucas Arts' games. Which is not bad if you want to play with HD or 4K resolutions and don't force your eyes with the small text (AND do not punish your processor by putting all the load in a single core)

I dislike Beamdog as nearly everyone, but tbh honest their forum response is well written and I do want to believe they will not screw this up.

I can't even play the old PST (even with mods) because of the terrible high pitch noise in the music tracks. I have the same issue even in the new Torment and just hope, that remastering the music will somehow fix it.

So, fingers crossed.

There's a UI patch which I believe scales the UI - takes a bit of setting up but you can get high resolution with decent-sized icons and text that's still readable.

Unless they allow zoom in/out, which apparently they will: https://www.beamdog.com/planescape_faq

Kotaku had a look, and it doesn't look terrible at least (not including the weird character graphics which you can apparently disable): http://kotaku.com/planescape-torment-enhanced-edition-makes-an-all-time-1793725120?IR=T

Namrok: I really dislike this notion that any depiction of a person that's slightly tropy or slightly stereotypy is automatically racist and sexist. Critics act like a nagging wife is a total myth.
Hear hear.

I'm getting real tired of "social justice" advocates pretending that any given female or minority character should be interpreted as a "representation of all women or minorities everywhere", and that writing fictional female or minority characters who have any character flaws that make them interesting or memorable, is "sexist" and "racist".

Jaheira's writing isn't "sexist against women" any more than Xan's writing is "sexist against men". They don't represent a gender; just themselves. Their characters are indeed based on simple tropes, but it's done in a way that actually works well in the game. There is no "flaw" in that.

That said, I think some people on this forum are far too invested in hating Beamdog and anything they make, to the point that they're simply being irrational.

PST:EE isn't another Dragonspear.
It's a tech update/remaster to bring the game to modern systems and screen resolutions.

Beamdog's writing team was not even involved in making PST:EE. It was made by Beamdog's tech team (mostly consisting of talented modders, some of whom, like the project lead aVENGER, had been active in the Infinity Engine modding scene for a long time and are well-respected there), in cooperation with Chris Avellone (the lead designer of the original PST). That sounds like a dream team to me.

Namrok: The problem with Beamdog is they simply aren't coming from the same creative place as the original games were made. They come at it from a lamentably post modern perspective, where everything needs to be deconstructed, and flipped on it's head.
I think it's slightly ironic that you bring up this complaint on the PST forum, seeing how the original PST, and to some extent the whole Planescape setting, very much is about deconstructing the Baldur's Gate / D&D setting and flipping RPG tropes on their heads.

Think about it: A D&D fantasy RPG where your character never finds a sword to wield or armor to wear... Where you don't encounter elves or dwarves... Where everything is different, often seemingly just for the sake of being different...

But... if Planescape:Torment was already flipping things on its head, and then Beamdog flips it again, won't that deconstruct the deconstruction, thereby turning it into just another bland RPG? ;)

From what I've read so far, the EE version won't be changed much except for spelling mistakes and including some stuff from unofficial patches. Which sounds good to be honest.

Because Wizards of the Coast (publisher of D&D) discontinued the Planescape setting years ago. The society of Sigil and the whole structure of the planes changed, and the current D&D edition's multiverse, while retaining some elements of Planescape, is incompatible with it. And it's exceedingly unlikely that Wizards would licence a new game for a defunct setting.

There is potential, of course, for new games set in the Forgotten Realms, as Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale were, as that setting is still in publication, though the Realms would not be quite as we remember them from those games and so a direct sequel to BG2/ToB would be difficult (then again, ToB brought that story to a pretty firm conclusion anyway).

Hahah, you aren't wrong there.

My fear with Torment is that any potential Beamdog additions would be too on the nose. But then again, I haven't played the game since it originally came out. Maybe I'll go play it again and find everything horribly on the nose already, and it's a perfect fit for the sorts of things Beamdog wants to do.
I see a lot of promises about them not modifying the game in this thread - not sure where they came from, i haven't gone through all the posts.
However, I also don't see any previews of the EE after a quick web search. Why?

Let's say that after getting BG1 and 2 EE before the expansion fiasco, I'm not in any hurry to get anything else made by Beamdog sight unseen.
I wonder how many bothered to directly contact Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro to express their opinion regarding the original versions of the Infinity Engine games only being available for purchase with the Beamdog Enhanced Editions or does anyone realistically believe that Beamdog and/or GOG unilaterally made that decision on their own?

It is Beamdog. Someone posted a reply they got from WOTC when the BG EE versions got bundled with the classics. The reply was a lot of bla bla bla Beamdog has the rights and can sell it as they chose etc"

It is worth noting that the games only got bundled AFTER that SoD mess backfired on Beamdog. You could buy the classics and the EEs separately for almost 2 years before that.
