Also there are no M16s in the game but agents with an USMC background have that affinity. Guess those things are there for future expansions maybe or just to give the game a more believable "look".
They add flavor?
Just like other languages (Cantonese, for example) one might never find a use for during a playthrough?
Cantonese is used in Hong Kong. Croatian and Afrikaans are presumably useless too. Maybe extended mode or playing as KGB or Mossad get different cities. I'm playing as CIA.

I got a trade contract for M16's three days ago so they are in the game.

They must be super rare then. I am almost 120 hours into the game and haven't seen a single one yet. No trade contract for them and none as loot. But thanks for the info.

Yeah, the devs fixed it last patch and I got a trade contract for them by pure luck the next mission I did.

Croatian is used in Dubrovnik. I also play CIA, so if you don't see yet it you will soon enough.

I noticed KGB definitely starts with different cities, but I think that eventually everyone gets access to everything, just in different orders - though it wouldn't surprise me if extended mode has even more than regular modes never get.

I suspect Portugese will be used for Lisbon - while I haven't unlocked it so far, this city was famous for espionage during the Cold War, so I suspect it will appear at some stage, even if it's only the extended play through.

I would have expected Afrikaans to be useful somewhere, given how during the '80s (at least in RL history) a lot of weapon dealers and mercenaries came from South Africa. Maybe it will also pop up later.

I got one as loot pretty early on. It worked out good because one of my agents I started with has the USMC background. The one thing I haven't been able to get are pistols my agents are proficient with. I also got a pistol silencer, but the only pistols I have are that DAO-12 and the .38 revolver, which no agent is proficient in. I have agents proficient with other pistols, but I not been able to find/buy them.

You're either still early in the game and/or RNG hasn't given you the pistols as loot or trade contacts yet. Eventually you'll have many pistols of many different types.

If you find yourself not getting any more unlocks (trade contacts, chemical compounds, training, etc.) from missions or solving files in analysis, then you've likely hit the end of the "pool" of random stuff you get for now. I usually notice this when I get nothing but "prospective agents" as mission rewards - doing a story mission generally opens up a ton of stuff straight away (often the story mission itself will give me multiple compounds and/or contacts - solving case files after that tends to then unlock more).

Oh and I have yet to see a single M16 in the game. However since I've already found a ton of G3s and are starting to get the next assault rifle after that regularly, I've probably already passed that point before the last patch fixed it.
