Greetings

I didnt pay attention first time i played the mission and saw the cutscene in my iitial playthrough of the game, but in my second playthrough it just struck me:

I think/believe there was a rather awesome and nice easter egg in this game. But it could just be me seeing things, so i'd rather have someone confirm or infirm that:

SPOILER ALERT BELOW

After the mission for Operation Northstar, we see the cutscene where Beholder Initiative still manage to fulfill their schemes by having the boeing plane shot down by russian fighter... The cutscene also says the plane was on its way to Korea.

So basically, we litterally get "the russians had shot down a plane on its way to korea..." (and i'd add "... two hundred and sixty nine innocent victims had died... Murder in the skies came without warning !")
Which basically IS the main lines from a song called "Murder in the Skies" by Gary Moore, that incidentally happens to be from the 80ies.
Such coincidence seems too good to be true...

So if it was accidental, well, it's still a great coincidence.
If it was intentional, i deeply bow in respect to the devs' dedication to the whole 80ies vibes in this game !

Thank for any answer on that matter

PS: game is awesome, clearly my weakspot for 2018, and i had seen, played and loved quite my share of tactical games so far...

I was not aware of this song, but looking it up it was a protest song against the Soviet Union's shooting down of Korean Air Lines Flight 007.

I suspect the in-game reference is primarily to the real-life event of KAL 007 being shot down - similar to how almost every major event in the game references actual events that took place during the cold war, and cleverly ties them together into a singular plot.
oh ok, so the whole mission in operation northstar is based on an historical event of a korean liner number 007 being shot down by soviets in the 80ies ?

then i guess the song is inspired by same event then, one same chicken laid two different eggs it seems :)

btw, they were so jealous of british's james bond agent that they thought a planed numbered 007 was a licence to kill everyone on board ? gee...

Also, like the ways the game ends, (no spoiler for people here) as being tied to other historical events... So the game aint occuring in a dystopia.

That "strange" ending also is closure enough for a game the way it went, afaic... but it leaves devs room to continue the whole thing on a wannabe sequel (please, do one ! possibly in the 90-ies or early 2k-ies)

Because imho, this game is great, for me it's a classical already and had a very good launch and support/feedback-using followup from very reactive and listening devs; they pulled a lot in this game, one can clearly sees

Also, couldnt help but putting the song here

The 007 bit is a freakish coincidence, which (despite what every single detective in every single crime/spy movie/book/game/etc. ever says) do exist, and quite often too...

For more info, this is a good place to start and will be better than me attempting to summarise: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Korean_Air_Lines_Flight_007

So yeah, they basically just wrapped the "real reason" for it into the conspiracy. Which fits really well, considering the incident prompted Reagan to allow worldwide access to the US's GPS (fits better than any of the other incidents I believe). Or maybe the game's not so fictional after all... Just kidding, we all know there's no actual "Beholder Initiative" (or IS THERE?)...

I'd likely buy a sequel/spin-off, though the '80s setting is sort of unique in that it's the most modern setting featuring a proper, old-school cold war. OK so MKULTRA was from the 50s/60s, but it still kind of fit - probably because I watched a lot of Get Smart in the '80s. ;)
