Well, there's only one user account on the computer. So obviously I'm already the admin.
Or is there some wizardry I'm unaware of?

usually you are not acting as admin even if you are the only user of your system.
on windows 7 you have a pop up menu where you can "open as administrator" when you right click on a program ( editor.exe for example)

Unfortunately just in time for me to get bored of outcast .-.

I've got some tweaks that I want to post, but they're modifications to most of the files that make a difference, including many gameplay modifications along with the graphic and sound ones. Doing this would thus require posting a complete set of INI files and instructions- Since it doesn't include actual game binaries that are required to run those, it's okay, right?

After searching through the .ini-files and trying every experimental changes i could imaging to work, there seems to be no way to let outcast switch earlier from low resolution textures to high resolution ones, while you walk towards a grafical object. When you get closer to e.g. an house the grafics gets sharper and sharper every few steps. Just when you stand right in front of that house - about 5 meters away - the game shows you the best possible grafical representation.

So my question is as follows. Is there any possible edit of the .ini-files that you could do to change the ingame usage of highest resolution textures relative to the viewing distance?

The aim should be to have always the best texture quality for all visible objects activated, at any time, irrespective of the distance to grafical objects.
Any suggestions?

While I'm not a big fan of arcade elements in adventure games, the slow projectile speed of enemy weapons makes encounters with Fae Rhan soldiers far to easy even for weekend players like me. It allows everyone to dodge bullets as easy as eating apple pie. So, as soon as I spotted the outcast.ini file amongst a dozen of other INIs and found that I can change the bullet speed for every weapon in game, I doubled the values for all of them (mine to, as I couldn't stand AI dodging bullets) thus making the game a little bit more challenging (note, that you can also change the speed of projectiles of various animals too, like spiders or zeedogs). After that, said soldiers were at last as dangerous as other Talans said they were. I didn't try tripling the values though, as things were sometimes too hot, especially during the attacks on various barracks and other military structures. Not to mention Kroax...

I also found setting map additive mode to off and tweaking its RGB values very helpful in order to make it a little bit more readable in some regions (especially Talanzaar and Okasankaar). Though map's RGB values are something you have to experiment with.

This contains every tweak I've done to improve the graphics, as well as some to tweak the gameplay to be faster and more action-packed.

I remember setting the resolution to fullscreen 640*480 as part of this, using a tool from these very forums, which I am not sure if I've included or not. It's the experimental High-Rez patch by Zenger here on the forums. I highly suggest that if anything like that is in there, you ignore it and get a more recent version from her here http://www.gog.com/en/forum/outcast/experimental_outcast_hi_res_patch_up_to_1280x768_cyana_lighthouse_problem_fixed/page1

However, as Zenger was using Megaupload, I'm not entirely sure if the patch still exists elsewhere. If it isn't included, I'll repost the 7z file with it inside. (I haven't touched outcast in a long time).

I've just purchased Outcast and changed the controls to WSAD configuration in line with the thread's OP.

Having read the manual there's a way of "locking on" to your target using the HUD and also to "activate X ray mode". The keys were previously K and X respectively. Since the keys were remapped, I can't seem to get these two options to work. Can anyone make enough sense of the ini files to let me know which buttons apply for these actions?

Also (and please bear with me), is there a way to refresh which elements are required to make specific ammo? I just seem to be blindly collecting metals, (un)stable foreign materials and vegetation without knowing why!!

I thought it told you each time you visit the guy who makes ammo? Like when you highlight an ammo type while talking to him, there's some text that tells you what it needs? I could be misremembering though.
