Perhaps I'm a little stupid or not smart enough, but I can not find how to launch game at 800×600 or higher resolutions :( There is not any word about it in manual or readme, and such resolutions could not be applied through start menus. Bad thing is I can't find it even on forum. Maybe it's because English is foreign for me and I don't know what keywords to use. So, at the end of this whining, can you tell me what to do? This would be just great. I can even write «thanks» after you post it :)
Thanks for the patch, Zenger - it works like a charm.

I had the original game, and loved it. I still have the old box set around somewhere, but when I tried to get it running a few years back on Vista, I just gave up in despair after lots of hair-tearing. :o)

When I saw it here on Gog - patched to run in Vista - I knew I had to grab it and take a trip down memory lane. Downloaded, installed, started playing... hmmm, that little itty-bitty window in the middle of a wide screen looked rather pathetic, especially with that yucky green visor...

"Maybe", I thought, "I should have left it as a fond memory... Ah well, it was only a few quid..."

But now I have your patch installed, and I'm running it at 1280x800, no visor, and it looks great!

Kudos to you. You've brought an old favourite back to life.

Just ignore the idiots whining about not doing a second patch just to suit them. If they're too mean to pay the pittance to download it from Gog and use your patch, why on earth should you spend months making a new patch just to save them $5.99? Humans!

Thanks! It looks wonderful, and it runs smoothly at 1280x1024 with Muskie's LOD enhancements ( http://www.gog.com/en/forum/outcast/experimental_outcast_hi_res_patch_up_to_1280x768_cyana_lighthouse_problem_fixed/post105 ) and Entropy's overall detail tweaks ( http://www.gog.com/en/forum/outcast/list_your_ini_tweaks ). Haven't tested much, but ran it in a combat and in-game movie in the marshes with no trouble.

I'm using Entropy's settings for water, as I like to see more reflection than Muskie's settings were giving me, and Entropy's are clear enough at closer ranges. I may tweak that setting a bit more though.

VladanStef: However, the camera is a bit too high in 16:9 resolutions (1280x720). Is it possible to move it down a bit? I've dug through some INIs, but failed to find anything relating to camera placement.

alexkbaker: Yes, I was asking the same thing a few months back. You can't see Cutter when you go prone in 16:9. Perhaps the camera angle was hard-coded into the engine though?
Is this simply a matter of the widescreen mode used? i.e. is the widescreen vert- rather than horiz+? This would mean that in order to make a widescreen resolution, the game uses a normal 4:3 aspect ratio resolution and then cuts off the top and bottom in order to make a widescreen aspect ratio. If that is the case, you might be better off using a 4:3 resolution letterboxed on the sides.

I haven't had a chance to try this patch myself yet so I'm not sure how widescreen is handled, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was vert- because making a horiz+ widescreen mode would involve forcing the game to display a wider image than it does normally. Vert- can be done just by cropping the original image.

Vagabond: I uploaded this patch to a multi-upload service just in case the link goes down.

lol question im new to the whole pc gaming thing.when it says install patch to directory where is that.ive tried putting it in the main folder and it keeps telling me to put it to the directory but i dont know what that means.thanks.i really wanna play this game on a bigger screen
i think that the best idea is to use the 4:3 resolution 1280x1024. This one dont cause the camera problem that is placed so high. I am not sure if the camera position can be fixed also in the widescreen resolution just with some ini tweak... ?
i have a geforce fx 5500 my pc res is set at 1280 by 720 on my 17" lcd screen.ive installed the patch and still i have an in game screen size of like 8 by 6.ive looked for scaling options on my gfx card and cant find anything..so shall i assume that im out of luck with the in game screen size?

There should be a scaling option for that card... did you find the Nvidia Control Panel? From in there, you'll see a setting for "flat panel scaling" under the "Display" tab. Check this image here:

The best setting is the one that says "Use MVIDIA scaling with fixed-aspect ratio", as that will allow you to run 4:3 games (non-widescreen) with black bars on the sides so the image isn't distorted by being stretched out horizontally.

By the way, if the graphics scaling options are the culprit, then you should be able to see it in other games. Can you try running a different game in a resolution LOWER than 1280x720? If it shows up in a smaller window with black bars around, then you do indeed have a scaling problem. But if it still fills your screen, then there's something specific going on with Outcast.

Also, some displays have built-in scaling options. You may want to check if your 17" display has its own settings for scaling. Some prefer to use the display's settings, but I usually use the graphics card settings.

too funny that screen shot that you took.(which im very thankful for) lol i have every option except change flat panel scaling but i have a few different ones too.run display optimization wizard, move crt screen position, and manage custom resolution.Ya all my other games ive ever played never had that black huge picture frame around them.are you saying i should lower my res and see if it does anything. and im trying to see what my fpd1775w tft lcd screen options will have for me..thanks again
how about my refresh rate..i dont know

That's weird that you don't see the option... do you have the latest drivers from Nvidia? I think some of their cards had some issues with the scaling options, which is annoying. Hopefully you can find a way to get it working.

And yes, in a different game, try lowering the resolution of the game and see what happens. If black bars show up around the image, then you do indeed have a problem with your scaling. If you run the game at 1280x720, though, it will fill your screen since that's your screen resolution. So you'll need to run something lower.

Refresh rate should not matter. That's just how often the screen updates the image.
Sorry for butting in on your troubleshooting. I just wanted to chime in that this patch is awesome, and along with a few .ini-tweaks makes it a whole other experience. I'm running at 1024x768 (because the higher settings gave me motion sickness), and it's crashed just once in about 20 hour play. Definitely worthwhile, if you remember to backup your files first. Accolades to the author, and kudos with winsauce on top!
It's been very smooth so far, but I've started to get a lot of crashes in Montaz... Monzata... The Lava World

Sorry to be pedantic but 1280x1024 is not 4:3, it's 5:4

Here's the definitive list of 4:3 resolutions:

640x480
800x600
1024x768
1152x864
1280x960
1600x1200

Hi everyone!

I'd like to sticky this thread but to do so I need to be sure that this patch helps make the game stable for everyone ;)
So how is the stability after patching the game with this ?

Cheers!
