I bought the game from here when it first came out and have played it for a couple months from first install. I stopped playing and haven't looked at it until now. Now I see all these updates and don't know what to do. How do I check which version of the game I currently have installed? If i's never been updated, how do make it current? I downloaded the installer files and patches from the menu here, but do I need to save my game files? When I run the 1.7 patch it tells me "This patch does not support your version of the game please download a new installer" Help needed!

Easiest would probably be to install gog galaxy, and make it discovered by Galaxy. After that the update should work through the galaxy interface
The patch expects you to be at 1.64 or 1.65. You probably are at 1.03 or something

Thanks, I was thinking about that, but is there a way to determine which version I have installed? And why don't I see all the update files in GOG?

Not sure about how to see what version you have. If you check the .exe where you installed the game, does it indicate anything there?

As for the update files, GOG often replaces the install files with updated versions after large updates. When they do this, they take down the older update files. If you figure out what you need in order to update and they're not listed on your game page, you can contact Support and ask for the ones you need. They'll usually provide them for you.
Kind of piggybacking on this thread, but kind of relevant. How do you move a save from an older version of the game a newer version if you are needing to do a full reinstall and not just update an existing game?

I found the saved files in the %AppData% folder. It is just as simple as copying those and pasting them into a new install?

While that would be the way to transfer or restore a save, I don't think it will work if the game version is different.
Is there no way to transfer a save then?

That would be quite awful.

Save game files from older versions should be accommodated in later versions. A save from a later version will very likely not work in an earlier one.

That said, if the save is from very long ago, it's probably best to just bite the bullet (or Vy'keen dagger) and start over fresh. There have been lots of changes and, honestly, the very eary part of the game can be the most fun.

Sadly, HG didn't populate the metadata with a version stamp (it shows 0.1.0.0) and I can't find any human-readable version information in the NMS.exe binary. #%$@ That's like the next lesson after "Hello, World!"

There is a "Date modified" of 12/13/2018 11:17 AM which looks to be the date of the last patch.

My files are dated 2016, which is when the game was originally released. I ended up installing the files I downloaded from the menu and now I'm all up to date. When I ran the game for the first time I did see my last save from 2016, so I didn't lose it, however I saw an error about "lost internet connection" when in the game... gotta look into that issue now. Ohh and now I have to learn about all these new features! I'm happy my $60 has gone this far!

Windows 7? There is an issue with that as it only supports TLS 1.0 and NMS requires 1.2 if I'm not mistaken. https://steamcommunity.com/app/275850/discussions/0/3315110799614169312/

Also, you could try to use that save, but make a backup first. It should convert it. But I would start a new game as well, because the whole start changed tremendously.
