I have never tried it myself, but I read from several other goggers that the rollback function is quite solid with Galaxy.

Unfortunately the 1.24a version is no longer available in the list so i can't roll back to it. Hence why I'm hoping someone knows if I can just copy the installation directory as a backup and copy it across the updated version if the new version doesn't work.

To be on the safe side unless anybody has a definitive answer I'd suggest doing a backup of your C: drive (assuming that's where you have it installed). Then you could be sure of getting back to where you started without missing any bits that may be in other places like the registry.

Having a backup system drive is insurance against hardware failure and malware. Also, especially given the "quality" of MS updates recently, it's not a bad idea to make a system backup before installing operating system patches.

I've been using Acronis True Image for years and I'm mostly happy with it. [1] It has saved my butt on a few occasions when the notebook PC's drive failed. There are free alternatives. I've heard good things about Clonezilla and there are others out there.

[1] The bootable CD/DVD version just can't seem to recognize the NVidia graphics card on the gaming PC so it boots to a blank screen. Solution: jump into the BIOS and set the system to use the mobo's embedded video chip. Annoying but not a big deal once scoped out.
