Well, that was fun.

You were right about turning off WiFi. I am sitting right next to my router so I doubt that my wifi is that spotty, but I'm guessing that since you know about that issue it's something that you're addressing.

Anyway, you might be interested to hear that after playing through a level I can tell you that at 800x600 the GPD Micro gets 17-30 fps by turning all quality settings to low and vsync off, which I consider quite playable.

When getting back to the hospital I got much closer to a consistent 30 fps and tried turning up each setting and the only thing that had a considerable impact on frames was dynamic shadows. I'm sure you'd expect that.

Anyway, I'm gonna delete this thread in a little bit because I think the thread title makes it seem like ppl are complaining about your game, and I don't think my initial complaint was valid.

The fact that Galaxy closes the game seems out of my control. Maybe you have an idea of why your Galaxy is behaving different from other people's?
Yes, dynamic shadows are off by default for a reason.
I just want you to note that later levels in the game are more demanding and I'm not sure they'll be playable.

The only thing that I can think of that isn't just default Gog Galaxy settings is that Galaxy is on the C:\ and my games folder is on D:\ other than that I can't think of anything.

EDIT: Oh also I have a bunch of other game platforms linked to galaxy. That's the only other thing that's not just default settings.

Well, apparently there's no way to delete a message thread on this platforms so I just want to be suuuuper clear to anyone reading this later:

I was wrong, I just had incorrect expectations of this game.
NIGHTMARE REAPER DOES NOT HAVE AN OPTIMIZATION PROBLEM.
This game runs poorly given what it even has to render. I have a 8700K and a 2080 RTX playing at 1440 on high settings, granted I play at 120 hz/fps but i'll get sudden drops to 70 fps in trap rooms. So I can imagine this game on older hardware. There's no reason it should run this badly given the content the game is offering.

I disagree. First of all, the performance requirements aren't just for rendering. This game has many cpu intensive features. Perhaps I value what the game is offering more than you do. Some things that may look unimportant to you I believe improve the experience dramatically.

The game runs fine on older hardware that is over the minimum requirements.
I get the feeling that you expect the game to run well with full dynamic shadows on any hardware. That's simply impossible and has nothing to do with optimization.

Reminder: perf improvements are still ongoing.

You've got the wrong feeling. I'm comparing the perfromance of this game compared to similar games, say even Amid Evil that's running the same engine. Excluding the DLSS and RTX build, I can play that game at 120fps with no drops at all as long as shadows aren't on 'epic' setting. I already stated I had the settings on high, dynamic shadows in this game doesn't add much to the atmosphere and nothing was on epic, the issue is during certain areas the frames drop in half, if you think giant performance spikes of that level are acceptable, then I don't understand what you're valuing. The game has poor optimizations in comparison to other games of the same caliber such as Dusk, Ultra Kill, Prodeus, and Amid Evil for seemingly no reason as there isn't much more visually going on. If you want to deny this then fine, but once you have a larger release audience you'll probably see this same feedback.

Nightmare Reaper does several things that are very costly and that Amid Evil doesn't do. NR levels have a ton more destructible objects, a ton more rich physics objects and way more gore that stays after a fight. Amid Evil also has static lighting and very rare dynamic lights, while NR is 100% dynamic lighting. I also strongly disagree that dynamic shadows don't improve atmosphere.

I'm not saying that the game can't be optimized further, just that it's unfair to compare it to these other games and that NR does things that other games don't. If I set the amount of destructible objects, physics objects, gore and lights to what Amid Evil does, the game would run WAY better, but it would be a worse game.
