Hi everyone,

Firstly, thanks for taking the time to read through this post and for any help you can offer.

Obviously, I recently bought NWN, downloaded it via the GOG Down Loader, made sure that the file sizes downloaded were basically the right size, installed and everything seemed to work fine. The installer passed the Integrity Check and the screen cam e up saying it had installed correctly. Rather than installing to the standard c:/Programs area, all games I install on the computer are installed into a separate drive that is only for games.

When I tried to launch NWN, I get the start screen and select play, then get the black screen with the NWN logo in it for about 5-10 seconds and then the game stops. figuring that this is probably due to running W7, i have searched the forums here, the support area, even done general and specific google searches looking for an answer. I have tried running it in every possible compatibility mode both with and without adjustments to the NWN.ini file for the moviesafe = 1 and DisableIntroMovies = 1 options, which takes quite awhile to work through all the possible combinations :'(

Since none of that worked, I downloaded the files a second time, again via the down loader program and tried it all a second time. still without any luck. a third attempt at downloading the files manually and then working through the different options for getting it to work didn't help either.

I have also downloaded the 1.69 Critical rebuild patch and attempted the above after running that patch.

Unfortunately, I don't know a great deal about troubleshooting problems like this, so if there are specific things about the computer I am using that you need to know, please ask and I will either pass on the information or ask for help in finding the information for you.

Thanks again for reading through the above and for any help.

So the only advice available is to basically do everything I have already done?

Starting again from the beginning and following the steps in the above post (again), if it doesn't work, then i guess I just give up on the game

This one's not a Windows 7 problem, I don't think. If it was, you wouldn't get the Atari logo.

Running the critical rebuild should not be required. So you can ignore that.

This sound like a video card driver issue. Be sure you've got the absolute most up-to-date drivers for your card.

A list of hardware on your rig would be helpful.

Although unlikely a solution, if you have an AMD dual-or-more-processor, try adding this line to your nwn.ini file:
Client CPU Affinity=1

(you could try it with an Intel chip too, but i doubt it'll work)

I think you've tried all of this, but leave your nwmain.exe file set up like this: Windows XP Compatilibility (SP3) Mode. Also, disable visual themese, disable desktop composition and run the program as an administrator.

Be sure you are doing this to nwmain.exe and that you are running nwmain.exe and not the launcher. If you run from the launcher, my experience tells me that it doesn't take into account the compatibility settings.

Let me know if this helps.
Yeah, on Windows 7 bypass the launcher and just run nwmain.exe directly with the recommended compatibility settings.
Just giving up s easier than all of these instructions.

But SP3 compatibility mode, running as the Admin and disabling visual themes will get it working for you.
I just installed this on a W7x64 laptop and I think I had a similar problem. I see the logo and then nothing... but running the game directly from the nwnmain.exe file worked.
Nevermind!

Only things I have tried was running as Administrator (right click shortcut and choose run as) and using something made that allows playing on wide screens. Not the exact same issue as you but something similar was occuring to me when installing IceWind Dale.
I had a problem that sounded just like yours.

Hitting play, screen get a few splash screens, black, back to desktop. Sound familiar?

I read somewhere around here someone just rick clicked desktop shortcut to NWN and changed it to open as administrator. Works fine now.

Hope you can get it working! I know how frustrating it is to get a new game only to find out you can't play it :(
I think many got off on the wrong foot.

I think it is very important that one has read the installation instructions BEFORE installing the game.

This means all of you really need to uninstall and install the game again following the recomendations....

I just bought a new computer...installed everything easily. Well, had to update my graphics card driver....but apart from that it was pretty easy...

reinstall the game in compatibility mode, then run the game in the same compatibility mode that you installed the game in. worked for me.
