The above link is to the game I want to purchase for mac. I had numerous problems in past with running said game on my pc. The game would crash and have crash dumps and it wasn't fun.

I figured was because vista was crappy operating system and it wasn't the game because I have friends that run it on win 7.

I have an osx operating system 10.6 for my mac. Will that game in that link work with my mac or should I just abandon ever playing this game?

I really want it to work on my vista but the computer's on the way out so I figure better not. Im investing everything in my mac.

No guarantees, of course. It's an older game so there is always a possibility of an unforeseen hardware or driver conflict, but... Yes. As long as you meet the minimum system requirements the Mac version of NWN should run on an OSX 10.6 machine.

I wish GoG would add a Mac version to the store.

The installer should run normally, but if it gives you a fit try booting in safe mode.

The Mac version does not include the Aurora toolset (mission editor).

You may have challenges installing expansion packs. Once a mac install is patched to 1.62 or higher the expansion pack installers stop working. If you want to install Shadows of Undrentide and/or Hordes of the Underdark (which I highly recommend) install them BEFORE updating the game to 1.69.

Once you're ready to patch just run a 1.69 critical rebuild.

If the disc is already a newer version (I don't think the game was ever released for mac after 1.3 but I'm not sure), if you have already patched your install when you get the expansions, or if you just want to save a little money on the expansions and you don't mind getting your hands dirty, there is a work-around.

You can use Windows versions.

This link is specific to SoU but the procedure works with HotU as well.

While the installers for Mac and Windows are very different, the expansion packs are really just bundles of data files. The data files for both versions are identical. This means that once you have the mac version installed you can actually add Windows version expansion packs to your install. The self installers don't work, obviously, but there is a fan made installer that does, or it can be done manually by extracting the relevant data off a windows disc and manually placing them in the proper folders of your install. I am not a Mac user, so I don't know ALL the details, but I helped a friend install it on his so he could play MP with us and it went very smoothly.

Haks, overrides, and mods are also just data files and will work normally on the Mac version.

Another option:
I am not entirely certain this will work on 10.6, I do know it works on 10.7+ but I don't have a 10.6 to test it on.

If you have the game on GOG you can download the three Windows installation pieces. Then download PalltheTall's NWN wrapper here: http://www.paulthetall.com/never-winter-nights-mac.html
Double click on the dmg, drag the wrapper to your desktop. Double click the wrapper, and select Install Software. Select "Choose Setup Executable" and direct it to the exe from GOG. It will take a few minutes to install (5-10 mins on mine). Then click Exit -not- Launch Game. The wrapper will then ask what to use to start the program, select nwn.exe Click Quit. Almost done. The next step is to get the movies to play so you don't miss the opening cutscenes. Right-click on the wrapper and choose show package contents. Go to drive_c>GOG Games>Neverwinter Nights Diamond Edition>nwn.ini. Open nwn.ini with a text program like Text Edit. Under [Display Options] (about halfway down the page) set SafeMovie to 1 (SafeMovie=1 instead of =0) add a line right under that that says Disable Intro Movies=1 save the document.

Ta da! Double click on it and you should have a fully working copy of NWN Diamond, fully patched with all the expansions working.

The one thing I had to change was to get Full Screen working on my monitor (I don't even remember why, I just have this in my notes). If the Config in the game isn't working then right click on the wrapper, and show package contents. Open the Wineskin.app Choose Set Screen Options at the bottom. Make the Override Rootless and the other one Automatic. Then click Done. It will look weird at the very opening screen as you will be able to see your desktop on the Play/Config menu but then in the game it uses a proper fullscreen. You can then change the resolution in the game itself.

I played through the whole OC, all of HotU and about halfway through SoU (I'll get back to SoU one of these days.) The only glitch I came across was that you could not bet on arena fighters in HotU, as the fix to that glitch requires the toolset and the toolset doesn't work in wineskin. Not too shabby for the only problem I've found so far. :D
