OK, not happy about this game at all.

Firstly it does not run and I find out that i have to change the .exe to another name to make it run.

Then when I get into the game I soon see that all the characters are invisible.

Finaly sorted out the invisible characters problems without needing to download any other software.

Now I find even if I change the resolution settings the popup windows in game IE: Like the menu window top right, and all I choose from it and the slots along the bottom all remain in a far higher resolution that make them hard for my not so good eyes to deal with, nothing else scales with any resolution changes.
As I say this game is more trouble than it is worth :(

Not A happy gamer at the moment.

Honestly man, there is bound to be a few obstacles, But from what I see, I think it is more a problem with your cpu, plus that the game is outdated.. If you are patient enough to address the issues, I can probably help.. The game is absolutely worth it.

Dude, it's designed to run on Win 98 with a 32MB video card. Of course it's going to have trouble running on a modern machine.

If you don't want, or if you just don't have the chops, to spend some time ironing out some kinks stay away from retro gaming. It's not for you.

At this point, I agree..

As the others before me said; You'll always have the chance to have some troubles with older games. But yes, imo, this game is definitely worth it.

On a second note; I didn't have any trouble with it all all, even though I installed it both on a Windows 7 and Windows 8 ? :/
Think I already posted this but I now run it under Mac using a wrapper from Paul The Talls site, runs just fine using that on my Mac :)

I'd cut the OP some considerble slack. I'm used to running games for Windows 95 on Windows 8, but I have come across few as shitty as NWN when it comes to getting it to just run decently.

I'm pretty comfortable with tinkering and coaxing what can be coaxed to run and almost always I succeed to such a degree that the game works almost as well and sometimes better than on the original system.

A lot of this is because Windows 8 is amazing. But also because the community around old games is often very resourceful and helpful.

That being said, I have never managed to get NWN to run acceptably. It runs, but incredibly badly. Glitchy graphics, lagging, low FPS, freezing etc.

I still try once in a while, but honestly NWN is very difficult to get up and running on a modern system without major glitches and poor performance - and not that great of a game anyway, so there isn't much incentive I guess.
I guess that depends on your system. I have a low end laptap less than a year old with Win 8.1 and it runs great with most graphics options on full blast (shiny water never worked). All I had to do was install DX9.

I think this is the best cRPG ever made. It's worth whatever time I might need to spend to keep it running, but I've never had to work hard very at it.

Yea, Win8.1x64 here, no problems--I originally had the "invisible characters" problem, too--but that took, oh, all of five minutes to solve through a Bing/Google search...;) As others have pointed out, with earlier D3d games (pre-D3d10) you need to install the latest D3d 9.0c into Win7/8, which is freely available from Microsoft, and co-exists happily with D3d 11.x, etc.

But running it on a Mac using a software emulator? Ugh. Now *that* is surely more trouble than it's worth...;)

Yes, it depends on the system and it does run, but I don't think it runs fine.

No matter what the resolution is it always seems to run at about 30 fps, and if it is run in high resolution (e.g. 2560x1440) it can introduce some UI bugs, even though the game does support that resolution it is best to run it in something low and not widescreen (e.g. 1024x768)

The point is this, it takes some effort to get NWN to run on certain systems, but it can be done. The result is mixed, IMO, since it doesn't matter what horsepower one throws at the game, it always seems to be driven by a Pentium III and a Radeon 9000 and the game seems to be happiest if it is set in a resolution that fits such a system.

Typically, other games benefit a lot from running a a modern 4GHz CPU on and AMD 7950, but not NWN.

But yeah, your milage may vary, and it depends a lot on what one is happy with, but NWN is not a textbook example of an old game that runs "great" on a modern system. It runs, it may take some tweaking, installing appropriate drivers in many cases and lowering expectations in some instances, but yeah it runs.

I just wouldn't describe it as running great or even fine, I guess I just have too high expectations.
