I'm playing NWN1 on Windows 8 using WinXP compatibility mode. The game itself plays just fine, but when I start the campaign the opening movie isn't displaying - or rather, its audio is playing but instead of actually showing the movie I just see the loading screen. I can still click the mouse to skip the movie and proceed into the game. The movies that play when you first start up the game (Atari logo, etc.) work normally. Any ideas on what I can do to solve this?

What graphics card are you using?
It's an integrated card, I'm on a laptop. Looking at my display settings, apparently it's an AMD Radeon HD 7420G.

If you are using the lastest drivers (anything above 12.1) for AMD/ATI then the problem is no opengl driver support. AMD drivers stop supporting opengl after version12.1. You can manually place the driver into your NWN main directory but you first have to get the dll driver. The file you need is named . You can get it by first downloading the older drivers from the AMD site and then opening(extracting but not installing) the drivers from any version before 12.1. I did this and now eveything works. This will work for any game that requires opengl.
What's the file name? It's missing from your post...

Yup. What he said.
Seem to have got the right file and got it working, thanks everyone for the help.

Okay, having a different problem now: while the movies work fine, the game itself is now extremely choppy, even on the menus and character creator. Thoughts?

First thing you want to try is checking your video settings. Make sure shiny water is turned off.
Shiny water is off. I just tried running it with all the graphical settings at minimum and it's not running any smoother.
Have you tried to select another Sound Provider in the sound options? Some of them can cause stutters and other issues...
Just tried switching through all the sound options and none of them made any difference.
Try editing the .ini (I think it's called nwn.ini) and make sure "multi-core" is set to false. multicore=0
I can't find a "multicore" setting in any of the .ini files, but nwconfig.ini has one named "NumCPUs", set at 2. Should I try changing it to 1?
That's the one. Yes. NWN1 has a bad time with some multi-core hardware. Set it for one.
Still isn't changing anything. I tried changing the sound provider again for good measure and that didn't work either. Also I'm noticing that the texture quality in-game seems really poor now, no matter what graphical settings I'm using.
