I just installed the game (Win7, 64bit), and the game won't run. I click play, and then it gets to the splash screen and crashes. What can I do?

Are you running the game as an administrator (right click shortcut or .exe and select Run as administrator)?
I am not, I bet this resolves the error. Why do so many GOG games require my running them as admin?
Older games were not written with User Account Control (UAC) in mind; it was assumed that the user playing the game had full privileges to read/write anything on the computer. With the increased security measures brought about by the introduction of UAC in Windows Vista, most processes are now executed as if done by standard users with no administrative privileges, even while on an administrator account. This causes many older games to choke as they cannot work with the files they needed in order to run, if UAC even lets them run at all without your intervention.
I have the same issue, running as administrator. The Play, Toolset, DM Client, etc screen shows up, I click play, the eye icon splash screen appears, goes away and nothing happens. Win 7 64bit, Administrator, Radeon HD 3300.
If you go into the directory you installed it in (and it really shouldn't be in program files, windows is funny about that folder), you should see nwmain.exe, if you run that does the game load?
I tried running the game as admin and it now works, thank you all.
I'm having the same problem, and unfortunately, running as Admin doesn't seem to fix it. I've tried the normal tricks - disabling all virus stuff, disabling themes, compatibility mode, etc. I've tried running nwmain instead of the loader as well - no dice. Any ideas?

same here, cant get it to run
I can start nwmain.exe itself and it runs from there. Together with SafeMovies setting and/or the dll hack from other posts this lets me play the game somewhat. However, is there a fix for this issue, that the initial screen, which is suppose is nwloader.exe, doesn't start the program?

Thanks

Using win7 64

Ive tried starting as admin and in configuration for XP from the shortcut, nwmain, nwloader, and nwn and none of them work for me, I also tried installing it outside of program files and nothing, anyone got ideas?
I've tried the safemovies and .dll fix now too, and no joy! Ugh, this is frustrating.

I cant get anyhting to launch it, anyone got any new ideas??
I'm in Win7 64bit, and I got it to work. I run the game (without admin) in Windows XP compatability, and it works fine (save annoying little bug that won't let me change the default hair and skin colors, as it will turn the selected area reflective silver). Its the only way to get past the splash logo screen that I and a few friends have discovered. Hope that helps!

Edit: There is supposed to be a video as you load the tutorial after creating a character, right? That I need to get to load, if anybody can help with either of those bugs.

I'm not an expert but I would try a couple of things

(of which some already where mentioned)

1) Start the game with nwmain.exe instead

2) Run as administrator

3) You tried updating the game to version 1.69 right? (using the separate updater utility)

4) Did you install the critical rebuild patch?
http://nwn.bioware.com/support/patch.html

5) Find the ini file that controls what movies are played at the startup of the game and comment them out //

6) Run in windows XP compatbility mode (in worst case)
