Hello,
I have been trying to get my old copy of Neverwinter Nights up and running on my Windows 7 64 bit OS and it has been quite a hassle. I seem to have gotten rid of all the crashes (or at least it appears so, I have yet to journey beyond the main menu) but I have noticed in the Movies section at the main menu if I click on a video it plays the sound but no video. I have tried the SafeMovie=1 thing but that did nothing, I have heard that replacing my binkw32.dll file with an "updated" one may fix it although the link for this specific file is dead.

I am wondering if anyone would mind re-uploading this file or if they have an alternative link that would do just fine also.

EDIT: I am new to the GOG forums and I realized that I didn't mark this as a question, I am unable to change this now but if anybody could do that for me I would appreciate it.

Welcome to GOG and you could try this link
Thank you for the help. It didn't seem to work for me so at this point I'll just accept it as broken and move on.

During the game I can see videos, but sound is choppy. But only sound plays if I try to watch videos in menu. But you could do like I do, download Bink Video Player from RAD Game Tools' site and watch the cutscenes with that.

Did you remember to check "Disable Desktop Composition" in the Compatibility menu of the game's shortcut? That helps with a lot of the stuttering, both ingame, in menus, and in movies.

Also, remember that you're not supposed to replace the existing binkw32.dll file with the one in the .zip. RENAME the one that's already in the game folder to "binkw32_ati.dll" (not "_bak", or "_sav", because the new .dll file will call for a file with the "_ati" annotation), and then copy the fixed file into your game folder.

Naturally. I get random stuttering only in movies and it's not big deal to watch them with Bink Video Player to get the clean performance. That another .dll file makes movies work in menu, but breaks them during the game.

So, I decided not to use it when I first tried to find solution. It seems that the game just doesn't like to work perfectly on my Win7 x64 system, but stuttering voices in cutscenes is just a minor annoyance and nothing I couldn't live with. As long as the actual game works without issues I'm not really complaining.

You set the Compatibility Mode to run for Windows XP w/SP2? I'm trying to figure out why I can get the movies to run fine during the normal course of the game, and you can't. Actually, the only real issue I have is that after the movie plays I have to quickly ALT+TAB back and forth to refresh the fullscreen rendering of the game, so that it actually shows up. I don't know why it does that.

If you've found something that works for you, that's cool, it's just something that's going to bug me for a while.

Who knows what are the reasons why something works in once computer perfectly, but has issues in another computer. Generally there is no solution which works with every computer. My issues are minor compared to ones some other people have had with this game and most of the time the stuttering voice in cutscenes is barely noticeable (although it varies). And yes I use SP2 compatibility mode and in general I have followed installation instructions which were given here: http://social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/187/index/3341490

It is possible that with some extra tweaking I could find the cause, but considering that I have already tried many orthodox and some rather unorthodox solutions it just doesn't seem to be worth the trouble.

And replacing one .dll file with another isn't exactly a foolproof solution. RAD Game Tools (developers of Bink) doesn't recommend it, because it can cause more issues than it fixes. Then again it's always worth trying, because sometimes it helps, but anyone who tries it should keep backup of the original file.

I should have clarified, I downloaded the link but the fix itself didn't work. Just a quick question, when you are in the main menu when you go to movies and play them do they show up or are they just black? When I'm actually playing the game the movies work fine it's just they don't work when played from the menu.
Before I applied the dll fix, they appeared as a black screen. Now they show up fine.

In case someone is still looking for that file or coming in through the search engines, I've put it onto a friend's webspace: http://mirror.aleturo.com/Games/NWN/binkw32_ati.zip
