You mentioned setting up port forwarding - however, do you have those ports allowed through your firewall? Depending on which product you're using, simply disabling your firewall would be the easiest (though not safest) way of testing to see if this is the issue.

The only firewall I am using is the windows software firewall built in to windows 7. NWN2 is allowed in. Do I need to make a separate entry for it in the outbound rules as well?

I'm uncertain as to whether the windows firewall follows convention with "in" and "out" rules. The easiest way to check, like I said, would be to disable your firewall and try and run the multiplayer again. No one is going to hax0r your computer and give you leet viruses in the 5 minutes that takes.

If it works with the firewall disabled, then you'll need to add exceptions for NWN (probably in both directions) to make it work with the firewall enabled.

If disabling the firewall doesn't work, then you're left with a broader aspect of troubleshooting to attempt.

This guide explains in detail how to set up a multiplayer server, it involves everything you would expect, but mentions that ports 5120 through 5300 should all be forwarded. Perhaps you should look into adding those additional forwards.

Lastly, make sure your friend is typing the correct IP address into the Direct Connect field. For example, go to this handy site and give him that IP address to type in - he should NOT be typing in 192.168.x.x or 10.1.x.x or something similar.

Good luck, let us know what works out for you.

Hi,

Sorry for the delay. We gave up. It never worked out and we got sick of trying.

I tried all of the things you mentioned, no dice.

Thanks,
