JudasIscariot: I would also advocate taking Lockpicking and taking the least worst trait, if possible. Lockpicks are really easy to make (8 small mechanical parts) AND they tend to bring in a little bit more loot than Strong does and they're quieter than Strong. Just my 2 cents, though :D

larsiusprime: Lock-picking is a GREAT skill for precisely this reason. My personal favorite version of the "power-start" strategy is:
Melee + Ranged + Trapping + Lockpicking.

I go for Melee rather than Strong because it gets you most of the same combat effectiveness (as well as the fur coat in the beginning), but without the high cost of Strength. Lockpicking gives me the loot bonus, and Ranged gives me more versatility with weapons. No negative traits required. If I wanted to be more of a specialist I'd throw in some negs so I could add more bonuses, but I like to keep it simple as I'm trying it out as an example of something to recommend to newcomers.
yep, this is certainly good to get your feet wet as you suggest. But, it feels incredibly easy at the moment using Strong, melee, tough, trapping. If you're experienced in the game, try using ranged as it's pretty awesome to be able to create good bows and arrows and just sling them away at distant targets. I like hiding and tracking too because I'm kinda the survivalist type. Being a tank, not worrying about the cold and stabbing enemies to death with little effort feels boring to me. :)

For sure! After I've put some more hours in I think I'll put in a "low power" guide that's optimized for interesting stuff and exploration rather than maximizing sheer power. That should be of more appeal to advanced players.

larsiusprime: 2. Kill the dog-man in the intro scene...
avatar
rampancy: Really? I always end up getting injured in the fight, and that winds up to be part of my undoing later on.
You can use more than one skill there: if you use Melee AND Strong (or Athletic), you kill the dogman without taking a scratch and even get a video of you kicking its ass when you scavenge the facility.
Anybody knows how to avoid the Merga Wraith? I died just two days in...

You wake up with very few items, but one of them is especially important. If you take it off or use it for crafting, you will be left unprotected from the Wraith (until you put it back on). So take a good look at your few items, and be extra careful with that mysterious one - at least until you're willing to try and tackle the Wraith.

Can you (or anyone) explain more about this? :

" Kill the dog-man in the intro scene with (Strong/Melee), use Trapping + corpse + glass shard to take his coat."

I killed him, and then I don't know what to do. His corpse is there, the shards are there, but how do you get his coat, exactly? What do you do once he's dead?

edit: never mind; figured it out thanks to Faenrir's post above mine... I should really read more before jumping!

larsiusprime: Okay, you're playing NEO Scavenger...
1. Pick Strong, Trapping, then either Melee or Ranged. Fill out the rest with whatever.
2. Kill the dog-man in the intro scene with (Strong/Melee), use Trapping + corpse + glass shard to take his coat.
Many thanks for this! Until this my main cause of death was hypothermia...
