So, as you may know, realMYST does not play well on Windows 8 because Windows 8 does not play well with DirectX 7 games. I was reading about getting things working for another game using the dgVoodoo DirectX wrapper, so I thought I would try it for the original realMyst, and hazah, it works!

Grab the latest dgVoodoo 2 package from http://dege.freeweb.hu.
In the zip file there is a MS folder containing two files: D3Dlmm.dll and DDraw.dll. Copy these files into your realMyst directory and run realMYSTSetup.exe to configure realMYST with the 3D hardware "dgVoodoo DirectX Wrapper" ( [dgVoodoo HAL] & [dgVoodoo TnL HAL] both seem to work fine) and to set your preferred screen resolution.

I still had to run realMYST.exe with WindowsXP compatibility get get the linking book video to work, but all in all, things seem to be working fine.

Addendum: if you wish to get rid of the dgVoodoo watermark, also extract the dgVoodooSetup.exe and run it. On the DirectX tab, there is a checkbox at the bottom "dgVoodoo Watermark" that can be unchecked.

My security software (Norton) reports that the latest download is riddled with dangerous malware.

medwabbit: My security software (Norton) reports that the latest download is riddled with dangerous malware.
That's probably because the ddraw.dll, which is the wrapper that translates between old DirectX and new, doesn't have all the right signatures (Microsoft) so Norton flags it as hazardous.

And by "riddled" what does the message actually say?
medwabbit's post started tickling my paranoia bone so I dug around and found the service VirusTotal, which will scan uploaded files by a plethora of AV vendors.

TL;DR:
Common AV vendors that didn't detect anything:
AVG, Ad-Aware, Avast, ClamAV, Comodo, DrWeb, F-Seture, Kaspersky, McAfee, Microsoft, Panda

Common AV vendors that did:
TrendMicro, Symantec (Norton)

Update: 2015.05.29

Dege, the author of dgVoodoo, has addressed my concerns on the Vogons forums. Thanks go to ZellSF for passing along my concerns there.
Dege Wrote:
What I can say is that dgVoodoo and my other stuffs often get false positive detections from various antivirus softwares but they are 100% safe. They don't contain any backdoor or dangerous code at all, it doesn't matter what your AV says. This was a problem for all other softwares built with NSIS (Nullsoft Installer) because that utility also builds an installer containing compressed data.
