The lights simply won't come on in the tunnels, nor will the compass light up. It doesn't matter how many times I crank the generator. Am I missing something, or is this a bug?

Be sure to completely load up the blue bar on the generator.

Retuning to these games again after playing them several years ago.
I had the same problem -- the generator light never turned green which meant that I could never turn on the lights. No matter how much I tried. I finally resorted to restarting the game from my last save (which was at the start of the Stoneship age) and made sure that i set the compass first.
