Poor is an understatement, I am unable to do anything once the game launches. The intro plays okay, but once you get to the starting point at the docks the whole game comes to a standstill. My frame rate drops down to 1-2 FPS. Cant do anything really. If i spam the ESC key the menu will come up, while in the menu the game is responsive and i can save, load, quit with no problem, it is just during actual game play.
I tried running in different resolutions 800x600x32 all the way to my native res 1920x 1080, no change. I turned the textures to low, no change. I change my Direct 3d settings from (direct3d T & L HAL) to (direct3d HAL), no change.
all GPU drivers are up to date, all windows updates are current.
Here are my PC info also.
My system information is:
Processor: AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 940 Processor, MMX, 3DNow (4 CPUs), ~3.0GHz
Memory: 4GB RAM
Hard Drive: 250 GB, 750GB
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 285
Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate 32-Bit
What else can i do?
Any one else run into this problem?
Thanks

How would everyone like for GOG to mention a "recommended compatibility mode" in game descriptions? Maybe that's something to add to the GOG website features wishlist.

Wolf-5: There is only one thing needed to fix this game!!!

Install Indeo codec. This fixes the missing videos in the books and stops the poor performance when you face towards the library. Again somehow related to the videos in the books.

I'm running Windows 7 Professional and was experiencing the same frame rate issue. Installing these codecs fixed the issue for me without changing the compatability or attempting to run the software in Windows XP Mode. Thanks!
Thank you for this thread! I was goin crazy because I knew there was no way that my rig couldn't handle a game that was released in 2000! Yet I was getting the same 1-2 fps problems as everyone else here. Running it in XP compatibility mode worked perfect for me :)
Installed the codecs and set compatibility to run XP SP3 and it's now solid as a brick.
Was crashing and stuttering before.
Thanks heaps. Enjoyed the rest and finished.

They NEED to bundle this with the game! It fixed my issue on Win 7 64 as well. Frames would drop to unplayable amounts. I also mirrored the file to my dropbox account in case the above link ever goes down

I am also struggling with poor frame rates. When I try to install the Indeo codec, the install hangs with the message "searching for Netscape." Any idea how to get around this?
Thanks!

When installing the codec, do a custom install and make sure to uncheck the browser related plugins.

I just bought this and I haven't been able to get it to run yet. Same trouble as others have stated - I open the game, intro goes fine, get into the game proper and as soon as I move, it crashes.

I've updated drivers, reinstalled the game, tried compatibility mode, nothing has worked.

I've a machine similar to the post I've quoted here.

When I try to run in compatibility mode, I get the "missing file" error as others have mentioned.

I'm pretty frustrated.
Works fine if you add XP SP2 compatibility when using Vista (I do).
