New here, but reading the reviews and the community it seems that there complications for Myst, Riven, and Exile for computers of recent generations (2010) using Win7. I have the original CDROM discs and I have tried using MIcrosoft's compatibility settings with no luck. Can someone please post the settings for each of these classics? Should I be using the GOG versions instead? What about the versions of QT and the choice of Direct3D vs Software? Help!

I don't think you can get the disc versions of Myst and Riven to run. It uses a really old quicktime and good luck getting that to run. Exile however should run fine without any compatibility whatsoever, or at least it does for me. Myst and Riven from GOG never posed any lasting problems for me, but you need to tweak some of the settings, should you decide to buy those. Good luck!

Thanks DaGobbo! I will download Myst and if it works, continue with Riven and Exile. I assume the URU disc should work? Have you tried that?
If you get the "Myst 10th Anniversary" box that has 1-3 Or the "Myst: The Collection" that has 1-5, then they should all install/run with some compatibility tweaks.

Some of the older CD/DVD versions of Myst and Riven won't install since they are 16-bit installers and won't install on newer 64-bit machines.

Myst 3 - 5 and URU CD/DVDs should not have any problems installing.

The digital version tend to have some of the same compatibility issues the cd versions have...with various fixes.

I recommend this guide here for any setup issues you might come across.

If the link isn't working try copying and pasting... :(

Thanks for the help but still stuck. Your link sent me to the Myst Community which I joined. I found the link you referenced for using realMyst-Gog edition but the link to compatibility settings is gone (error 404).
I installed but the program tells me "no suitable rendering devices found.". I tried different compatibility settings but no luck. I am using an HP Pavillion laptop from 2008 with Win7Pro. Any ideas?
"No suitable rendering devices found" - Now what do I do??!!!!!
This is from GOG downloaded RealMyst after setting WinXP and administrator properties.
I downloaded the latest Win7 QuickTime version 7.7.6 but that did not help.

RealMyst has a setup menu outside of the game which you can run from the folder. There's a couple of options there. I run it in "Direct3D T&L HAL". I don't use advanced mappings or DirectSound 3D in the expert settings. For some reason I run the game on a lower res than my native screen res. I forgot why though and don't want to fiddle with it, because I do remember having some headaches getting this to work. Which it does flawlessly now btw. I also run it in XP service pack 2 compatibility, but not as an administrator. Hope this helps :)

I think you gave me a hint here. I only have VGA graphics adapter on my HP laptop. Do I need to get a 3D driver to run these games? Where do I get something like Direct3D or anything else?

I'm a bit confused, there's still systems without direct3D? I thought that was part of directx, your graphiccard/chipset and it's drivers. If you don't have directx you should install it, but games since the 90s have been using it, so I can't imagine you don't have it on your laptop (unless it's like 20 years old). Also, if the RealMyst setup opens it detects your 3dhardware, so if you get the option to select direct3D in the setup, you definitely have that.
