Viperspider: Would you happen to know if it's possible to enable subtitles in this edition of the game?
avatar
ConsulCaesar: Yes it is! While playing, go to the ScummVM menu (default is F5) and select Options, then Audio. You can choose between voice acting, subtitles, or both
Just noticed that, lol. Thanks for the help!

mikeharvat: Is anyone able to get the special edition music working in Monkey Island 2? When I use the builder, I get the voices just fine but it uses the standard PC soundtrack.
If you check the original topic on Lucasforums (now defunct):

"Q: Will you be able to make it so the music files can be replaced by the special edition versions?
A: No. This is impossible to do with SCUMM V5 as it is. This would require a complete rewrite of the music engine, which is not in the scope of this project."
Hey guys,
I made some custom icons if you want a shortcut for the talkie editions but want them to look like the original games instead of the special editions

Thanks! This is what I figured, but I thought I'd ask. Nevertheless, this little project is a treat!
Hello, I got to where I can load up the 'new' game in SCUMM. Then I go to play the Secret of Monkey Island (SE Talkie) edition and everything looks okay until the characters start to speak and I get this error message (attaching screenshot). Any help you could provide would be much appreciated thank you!

Viperspider: Hi all,

I have been trying to get the Ultimate Talkie edition working but I think I have hit a wall.

I have followed all the instructions in the first link that OP posted but hit a dead end when SCUMM VM couldn't recognise MI1 special edition as a game. I then read in the second link that OP posted that you have to extract the CD version from the special edition exe so SCUMM VM will recognise it but the links (apart from the source code) seem to be dead.

Does anyone have a tip for me on how to get this working?
avatar
ConsulCaesar: I just managed to install it! I wanted to be able to play with the old graphics but with voice acting and the new music! So far it works flawlessly.

Turns out you don't need any programs to extract the CD version. The file that is mentioned, Monkey1.pak, should already be in your installation folder. Just place the MI1_Ultimate_Talkie_Edition_Builder folder in the same folder that you have installed the Special Edition (for example, in my computer it's D:\GOG games\Monkey Island 1 SE). Make sure that the Monkey1.pak file is present. After that, follow the instructions.

When you have everything installed and go to import the game in ScummVM, din't stop at the first folder. Open the MI1_Ultimate_Talkie_Edition_Builder, and then the new folder that the installer creates, so ScummVM will recognize the game.

It took me some time to figure out everything, so if you have any other trouble let me know and I'll try to help. :)

Hi,

I have been trying to build a talkie version of The Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition using the GOG.COM version, which I have installed in C:\GOG games\Monkey Island 1 SE.

The Monkey1.pak is not found in the game installation folder, so the talkie version cannot be built.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated, please.

Thank you.

Hi,

I had the same problem but installing on the steam version but I imagine it's all the same. When running the install.bat file, it came up "Monkey1.pak" not found.

I realised in the instructions, it says to copy the MI1 Ultimate Talkie Edition FOLDER, not the folder contents. Once I did that, worked flawlessly.

Hope that helps:)
Can you make a classic version of the game running in ScummVM in all the languages?

No, you'll get the English versions out of this. But for the first game there is a patch which replaces the English subtitles with the German ones:

If you have run install_flac.bat, inside your MI1_Ultimate_Talkie_Edition folder you should have another folder called se_music_flac. (If you choose install_ogg.bat for smaller file size, there should also be a folder, but with another name).

On ScummVM, select The Secret of Monkey Island Unnoficial SE Talkie and click on the fourth button (my interface is in Spanish, but it should be something like "Edit game").

Select the last tab (should be something like "Paths" or "Routes") and click the second button to add an additional path. Select the se_music_flac folder and it's done.

Is there any way to get this working on Steam Deck?

If Steam Deck can run ScummVM, then yes.
You need a Windows PC to actually create the talkie version, then you just need to copy the files to the deck and add the game to ScummVM.
