First off, it's awesome to finally see this game here on GOG! :D
With that being said, I figured I'd direct people towards this amazing project by LogicDeluxe.

Essentially, this tool puts the voice acting from the special edition into the original game. Making a classic Talkie Edition that's playable in ScummVM or DOS machines!
(This is for Monkey Island Special Edition 1&2)

Also, it implements many small fixes to the game (Like the VGA Spiffy portrait, inserting back the stump joke and giving you the option to use the SE, CD or midi soundtracks)
A majority of the fixes can be read in the description to this video.

NOTE: This does not require the original game, only the Special Edition. The original game files are present in the Special Edition, therefore the installer uses them as the base.

If you wish to just extract the original (untouched) Monkey Island CD files, for use in ScummmVM, then follow this guide.

Well, that's cool :D But do you know if there is a way to add the voices in the classic mode directly?

Sadly, there is no mod to make the classic mode (in the Special Edition itself) have voices.
However, it is better to play the game in ScummVM/DOS anways, since it bypass's the new bugs introduced by the Special Edition’s interpreter.

This guide is awesome!

I played Monkey 1 for the first time in 2009 with the SE.
Now I would like to play just the old classic. I saw already an Lets Play to the classic games, but I want to play it by myself.

This guide is perfect for me.
I will try to find an german translation patch. Then it would be more awesome :D
I'm not a big fan of the special edition, but to be honest, while the new artworks are pretty ugly I always thought the voice acting did much more damage and ruined a lot of the humor in the writing. The second game's SE was much better about that though, as far as I remember.
Does the tool support multilanguages?
I've gotten this weird problem with my version were the music have disappeared. It worked just fine last year when I installed the talkie version to ScummVM, but after I moved the files over to another PC (including the save files) the music simply stopped working. The special edition voices work just fine, as does the original sound effects, but the music is simply not there. Has any one else had this problem? Any suggestion as to what might have gone wrong?
The new graphics look awful. As with most remakes I would otherwise have no interest, but would the SE be worth getting just for this 'ultimate talkie' hack? I already have the Bounty Pack, but its MI1 has CD audio instead of the original track and no stump joke..

Can the talkies be turned off? I fear I might not want them either.

I know if your using ScummVM you can shut off the voices, not sure about DOS.

With that being said, It's up to you if you think having the floppy music and added stump joke/bug fixes is worth the purchase.
As for me, it was a childhood dream of mine to have a Talkie version of Monkey Island 1&2, so these mods really made the purchase worth it for me. Though I did buy both for $7 on a Steam sale.

Good to hear. I don't know if I want the voiceovers or not, but someone said that they diminish the jokes somewhat and I can see how that could be the case. Do love the fact someone has managed to combine/restore all the unique features of the game.

It's still not worth the full price for me since I already have rather good a version, but I'll wishlist it for later.

EDIT 1:

I got it from the ongoing Insomnia promo and built the Ultimate Talkie.

The DOS version does allow a toggle of the voiceovers with Ctrl-t, but I find that I like them, so I left them on. Some of the tone is different from how I always imagined, but overall they're pretty good. The stump joke appears to be still missing :( I'll need to take a look at that.

The ScummVM version seems to be restricted to the music from either the CD or the SE version, though if you like them more than silence you can move the extra ambient SE tracks to the main directory where the game will always find them. The MT-32 tracks won't work right in ScummVM because there is not supposed to be any in the VGA version. If you want them and can build ScummVM from source, it's not a hard fix. Check out engines/scumm/detection_tables.h and add a variant of the CD version with MDT_MIDI | MDT_PREFER_MT32 added to its midi driver flags and with GUIO0() as it's GUI options. Use that when adding the game.

EDIT 2:

The stump joke is restored, but it only shows up in the keep original text mode, being just a regular old stump in match voice acting mode. The DOS version toggles this with Ctrl-q. Unfortunately in the Linux version of ScummVM this combination triggers its Quit function. Curses. Other platforms may have an easier time.

I've been able to get ScummVM to play the mod with adlib (by simply removing CD tracks out of the game directory), however, I've never been able to combine the adlib with the ambient SE tracks. How did you accomplish this?

Also, if it's not too much trouble, could you pm me your custom ScummVM for MT-32?
I've been disappointed that ScummVM didn't suppor MT-32 with this mod for a while now.

LentFilms: I've never been able to combine the adlib with the ambient SE tracks. How did you accomplish this?
I'm not sure that I did. The SE soundtrack contains tracks 25-29 that the CD soundtrack doesn't, and there is an included optional script that will move them to the main directory so that the game will still see them even if you're otherwise playing with the CD soundtrack.

I tried the other ambient tracks with the MT-32/Adlib music but they don't seem to fully work. For instance, if track22 is present then the intro music will not play for some reason but the scumm bar music still does. There may be other examples. Perhaps there is still room for improvement in the Ultimate Talkie..

Are you on Linux by any chance? I have no means to develop on Windows or Mac unfortunately. It shouldn't be hard though, perhaps someone else could compile it for you? I basically just inserted this in scummvm-1.7.0/engines/scumm/detection_tables.h above line 244

{"monkey", "Ultimate Talkie", 0, GID_MONKEY, 5, 0, MDT_ADLIB | MDT_MIDI | MDT_PREFER_MT32, GF_AUDIOTRACKS, UNK, GUIO0()},

I believe I misread your original post.
I know the mod says in the readme that you can move these tracks to the game directory and they will play in all music options. However, they seem to only function in the CD track music options.

Would love to play this with MT-32 music and SE ambient tracks.

I'm running windows.
Though thanks for the instructions for modifying it.
I might be able to try this myself.

Using ScummVM, how do I make the extracted FM-Towns and SegaCD versions have music?
And how do I change the music in any version? (CD version to SE)
it was in the ScummVM install part of the read me, to change the Extra path in ScummVM
