I'm having trouble setting up the sound for World of Xeen (using the install.exe program). Depending on what I've set for Speech, the game locks up whenever I'm in a cutscene with any talking (visit a tavern, enter a tower, etc.). If I set Speech to None or PC Speaker, where I get subtitles instead of speech, the overall sound volume seems to be permanently reduced after these cutscenes.

To make things interesting, I'm playing this on a Mac through Boxer, using GOG's dosbox.config file.

You might consider DOSBox instead... there is a Mac version, and the configuration file will definitely work in that case. You can find the Mac version at dosbox.com.
You mean raw DOSBox?

I'm curious about what the difference would be, since Boxer is supposed to just be a front-end for DOSBox.

Update
After some poking around, I've found that the lock-up during cutscenes doesn't occur when I run Xeen through the DOS prompt instead of through the shortcut Boxer creates. Here the game's dosbox.conf file isn't loaded (I can tell because the game is noticeably slower :P ) so it must be something in that.

Update 2
It'd kind of a band-aid solution, but I've discovered that the combination of Sound Blaster (not Sound Blaster Pro) for Music/FX and PC Speaker for Speech works. I get subtitles instead of speech, but at least the volume of other sounds doesn't get reduced.

Sorry, didn't really look at the link so I thought Boxer was an alternative to DOSBox, rather than a front-end. But, you could try running it "raw" anyway just to see if it fixes anything... GOG actually sets things up automatically in a pretty nice way so you don't have to fuss around too much. Although that's if you run their installer in Windows; I don't know how it works on a Mac.

Unfortunately I'm not familiar with the specific sound settings for Xeen as the last time I played it was back when it was released. You could mess with the sound settings in the .conf file instead of through the install.exe though. There are several sound options in the .conf file and you can probably get something that works through a combination of using install.exe to pick devices and then the .conf file to tell DOSBox how to emulate those devices. For more detail on the .conf file, including sound settings, check out this link:

http://www.dosbox.com/wiki/Dosbox.conf#.5Bsblaster.5D

That will redirect you to a separate page on sound too.
Your link helped me out, Waltorious.

The key is making sure the IRQ variable under sblaster in the configuration file matches the IRQ setting you set in install.exe. So, if you set the IRQ to 7 when running install.exe, you have to open the conf file to set the irq field to 7 as well.

Glad you got it working! Enjoy the game, it's a good one.
