So I finally cleared out Castle Darkmoor, and there's one thing I'm still confused about:

What's with the six pillars in the second half of the dungeon, where the second giant cubic switch of doom is? (I'll attach a screenshot that should hopefully help clarifywhat I'm talking about.)

The inside edges of the pillar show up as "points of interest" on my Master Wizard Eye, but I tried clicking on them and they don't seem to have any effect. Or is it just bait to get you into the fireball trap? (Kinda like that alcove with the poison gas.)

Gonna write it off as "huh, that's weird" for now, but I'm just curious if I'm missing something.

(My Google-fu is too weak to uncover anything beyond "This is where the second switch is.")

alright after checking out the area i have determined that the pillars purpose is to
define the area of the fireball trap. In that if you enter the rectangle that is outlined
by the torches on the pillars, it will launch multiple fireballs from the walls of the
room aimed generally at your location
other than that the are just decoration or load beraing support for the roof

That sounds right.
Darkmore is something else.
But with the right NPC's and wards against being put to sleep, it is manageable.
But when I first did the Castle, it seemed endless.

I just yeeted through the castle, didn't bother killing anything other than a few Hobgoblins and the Lich King.
Er, but don't they change color? I mean the red cube. I have a vague memory that it changes to blue. Or maybe it changed to red? By clicking on it or something…

I've been wandering around in MM6 recently, but I'm still busy with other things rather than visiting Castle Darkmoor again any time soon.

Which is necessary, of course, since the first one gets you to the second one; the second one drops the invisible shield blocking access to the third one and one of the memory crystals (part of an essential quest); and the third one transports you to the chamber holding the Book of Liches you have to destroy (an optional quest, but one you may as well complete while you're there).
