Hello!

Just found the MMResTool widescreen patch for M&M VII here
Unfortunately, when I choose an actual widescreen resolution (tried 1680x1050, 1280x800 and 1280x720), it crashes when I look down with the mouse as far as possible (mouselook activated via the grayface patch). When I choose a 4:3 resolution (tried 1280x960), it works fine.
Is there a way to get widescreen and mouselook to work together flawlessly? Would be great if that was somehow possible!

Edit: The crash only happens in outside areas.

Did you respect those steps:

1.Download MMResTool027fix2.zip and extract it into the installation folder.
2.If you are using the GrayFace MM7 Patch (recommended) delete mm7-rel.exe otherwise MMResTool will change the wrong file.
3.Edit mmt_d3d_screen.bat and set your resolution, then save the changes and run it. If you want a different resolution simply repeat this step.

I picked up the answer to that query in reading through the old posts about the utility begun by the author of the utility, in another forum. The answer is that the game engine's internal cache, where things are stored relative to graphics resolution, simply isn't large enough to accommodate resolutions over a certain point--and especially 8:5 resolutions (16:10/9). So you basically want to use the highest 4:3 resolution that is stable for you. I believe I am also using 1280x960, btw. Also, 1600x1200 has worked for me, too, but not as well.

Outdoors there'd be more data needed in the engine cache than indoors, so the original utility author's explanation makes perfect sense. MMRestools is a hack, remember--find a 4:3 res that's stable and stick with it. There is no other solution.

I see, thx for the info, I'll stick to 4:3, then.

Yes, I looked *everywhere* for some time for additional info on the very question you asked...;) Here's a thread link for you that you might wish to read for ideas and perspectives on the topic:

http://www.celestialheavens.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=9873&highlight=mmrestool

That's the thread I alluded to earlier. It's got some good info in it, if you're interested in that sort of thing. It's written by the utlity's author, and it's just a shame the guy didn't continue with his plans ....:\ I'm guessing, though, that his plans simply proved too ambitious and would have required too much work so he just quietly bowed out. Still, I think his work greatly improves the M&M VII graphics as it is! I can get the utility to display 1920x1200, outside, for about 5 minutes before the crash...;) But you have to strike a balance because the text gets smaller and the maps get tinier the higher the resolution, so 4:3 1280x960 seems to strike the best balance for me! No crashes, much better graphics, imo.

Glad I could pass this along...Enjoy!
