How long is this game? This is my first MM game so I have no idea how long this type of game lasts. I'm curious so that I know how much I want my characters to specialize in certain skills and how many.

My sorcerer is currently an expert in fire and air, and I wanted to learn more magic but worried whether I'll enough skill points to get at least a few into grandmaster. I don't want to become a jack of trades.

Also, is Water Magic worth getting? Town Portal sounds tempting but it's the only thing that sounds enticing. What about mind magic?
You can get a lot of levels, definitely enough to grandmaster all casting skills and specialize afterwards. Since expert/master/grandmaster do make a big difference and raising already high skills requires more skill points, definitely become expert (requires only 1+2+3=6 skill points) in all skills before starting to master the first ones.

Water magic is the best spell school. Besides town portal you'll also get Lloyd's beacon to speed up your traveling and enchant item to get better equipment or at least more valuable money when selling your stuff. It's the first casting skill I'd master.

I'd say air is just as useful, with the fly spell, invisibility, and better damaging spells.

More importantly, you need to get to Nighon to become a water magic master which you can't do until either you're at mid-level or have invisibility (those Minotaurs are hard).
On the other hand, you can become a master at air magic master in the elven lands which are much easier to reach.

So, contrary to the popular wisdom you see in most guides, I'd advise you to master air first ten water for your sorcerer.

Water magic is essential, and if you have master air already (a must) you can get through nighon tunnels quickly and undetected using invisibility (there is a very fast route). Also, mind magic is useless except for curing status effects (fear, paralysys, insanity).
