I've never seen that error before, but could it maybe have something to do with running the English version of MM7 with a non-English character set? Not sure why that would cause an issue but could be worth a try.

Also the usual things like reinstalling, running as administrator and deactivating movies and 3D from the setup menu can sometimes help.

Edit: also running in Windows 95 compatibility mode seems to solve this for other people:

I have the same thing happening to me and different compatibility modes do not fix this problem. My instinct tells me there must be a work around for this problem. This might be my first "money back guarantee" game from GoG, a shame cuz I really wanted to play it

The one clue I can offer is that after a fresh reboot, I can sometimes start the game through the first initial autosave, (after the cheesy video). But then, try to save again and, same error.

I've got this happening now with MM8 on WIndows 8.1.

It worked just fine for the past two weeks, now, all of a sudden I get the error about corrupt load save, and it can't even start a new game, much less load any of my old saves.

Could a Windows update have caused this?

It's very frustrating.
Darn, I just downloaded MM7, and I've got the same issue as the OP. I can't even start a new game.

So, whatever is causing the problem, it is causing both MM7 and MM8 to crash on save, including the first autosave when you try to start a new game.

What's confusing is that my MM8 was working just fine up until today, so I can't imagine what changed to make it start crashing like that.
Same problem : Just after video the game crashes with errors "save game corrupted" with differerent numbers.
Same problem here. At first launch the game started well. But not anymore. Compatibility modes and run as administrator don't work.

The same problem happened in MM6 and MM8 too.

But here is some strange things:

The game is installed in C:\Program Files (x86)\GalaxyClient\Games, but the error message is referring to D:\mm7\src_eng\MM7\Code\. There is no such directory on my HDD.

@Koorte, I noticed that, too! Except mine says F: instead of D:

"F:\mm8\src_eng\MM8\Code".

Not only is there no such directory on my PC, that entire DRIVE doesn't exist on my PC.

My PC has Windows programs on C: drive, an empty D: drive for Lenovo, which I assume has something to do with the quad core processor, and a dvd drive lableled E: drive.

Also, I tried installing from my old discs, and it's giving me the same error when it tries to save. So, the problem isn't specific to GoG's version. Could something have gotten changed in a registry entry or something? And why in the world is the save game trying to access a non-existent drive?

OK, here is a solution that worked for me.

I have McAfee Internet Security installed on my PC. In my last desperation I turned off its Real-Time Scanning.
And Voila the game(s) is(are) working. So I added the game exe(s) to the security software Exluded Files list and turned the Real-Time Scanning back On. And now all three games are working flawless.

I hope this solution works for you too.
@Koorte, thank you, thank you, thank you!!! You are a sexy, shoeless, god of tech troubleshooting!

I had a feeling McAfee might be the problem, but I had no idea where to check in the program!

The only thing is, adding the MM .exes to the excluded file list doesn't make the problem go away. I have to completely turn off that feature of McAfee.

Now, if only I hadn't lost my save game file that I'd spent over 30 hours working on while I was uninstalling and reinstalling and tweaking the program. I uninstalled and reinstalled so many times I lost count, and I forgot to click "save your save game files" one of those times, and I had foolishly moved my backup save folder into the game program folder during one of the times I uninstalled.

But hey, I'm just so happy I can play again, I don't really care.
You're Welcome :)

I spent 3 days trying to set up virtual Windows 95 + 98 + XP, using DosBox and Virtual Box, none of them would run this game satisfactorily. I don't know how you tied it to McAfee but bingo! You are correct, sir. Turning off Real Time Scanning solved this problem.

A thousand thanks

I would never have guessed it right away( i also have McAfee), but your solution works for my game running on Windows 8.1. Thanks for figuring it out!

Many thanks for your inspired solution, it's worked for me too.
I'm a long-time fan of the MM and MM Heroes series but I'd missed MM7 and MM8 (not sure if they were ever available in Australia, actually) and was looking forward to downloading and playing them - until this happened! But it seems to be OK now.
