Finally got around playing Might & Magic 6 more than just the New Sorpigal area. Got sucked in good. I was pretty excited when I got basic Light and Dark magic spells like "Hour of Power" and "Day of Protection" but then I started to compare these mega-spells with the regular spells like "Protection from Fire" and I noticed that the single spells were actually better than the super-spells. What's the deal with that? It's kind of tedious to cast each spell separately but it's pretty necessary especially in harder dungeons. My ranks are higher in spirit, body, fire etc. and they are almost all in Master level so could that be the reason?

What are your opinions on this? Do you guys prefer "all-in-one" or single spells? Does someone have more in-depth information on cost-effectiveness of spell using? Should I devastate Free Haven with Armag... wait what?
I'm not far enough to learn Dark/Light, but I believe they cast the buffs at 4xskill or something, so it is definitely because you've Mastered Elemental. When you get Dark and Light to the same level, they should be better.
Get light and dark to master level and then compare results. However in MM6 mastering light/dark is a bit tricky since it's tied to your reputation. The trick is to do quests until you're saintly, get master light for all characters who can do it, then do the holocaust thing in one of the cities (armageddon spell) and get master dark. After that just donate enough money in the temple to get neutral reputation (or don't, fleeing peasants are so fun, and watching them tremble in fear also, just don't visit castles or you'll be thrown in jail).
Got Mastery in Light Magic now and I'm getting better results but now Spirit, Body and Mind became pretty much obsolete expect for the status effect removal spells and healing spells. And I'm not sure about Dark Magic. Most enemies are immune or resistant to Dragon's Breath which seems like the best Dark spell out there. Finger of Death just plain sucks. Day of Protection is nice.

Shrapmetal.

Shrapmetalshrapmetalshrapmetal.

Use it like a shotgun, run up in someone's face and fire it off for massive damage. Armargeddon is also fun. :3
Dragon's breath is great against those annoying flying eyes from Castle Darkmoor. I always nuke the hell out of them and save myself some time. But yes, the most useful is shrapmetal, followed by day of protection. Also cloud is nice as cheap but damaging little spell.
It's funny that Shrapmetal is a high-powered Dark Spell in the 3D games, because in the 2D ones it was a pretty low-level spell.

Yeah, in 7 I found Dragon's Breath useful for doing high, concentrated damage to small groups. Souldrinker was also pretty cool, but a bit too expensive for a somewhat underwhelming effect. Toxic Cloud was nice, but pretty much completely superfluous by the time I got it (in 7, I don't know whether you can get it earlier in 6). It makes a lot more sense in 8, where you can get it right off the bat by recruiting that Dark Mage guy.
Thanks for insights. Shrapmetal was really effective against hydras in Paradise Valley.
Beat 6 today, blasters pretty much stole the show in endgame and made damage spells kind of useless. Hell, the fantasy suddenly changes to sci-fi and you soon find yourself blasting robots with laser pistols in a space ship or something. That's something you don't see everyday...

Now time for some blood & honour...

If you want and have the money you can get toxic cloud right at the start. Just go to blackshire and learn basic dark magic.

Ah, that makes more sense. At low levels it's an expensive but strong nuke, but in 7 it was just kinda useless. Don't you have to have a bad reputation to learn Dark, though?

You need notorius reputation only to master Dark Magic, you can be all goody-goody you want to get the basic. Easiest way to achieve notorius is to use armageddon in some town like New Sorpigal though my reputation never got higher than 200 after that ''incident''...

Ah, good to know. So Blackshire is the Dark town, where does one go to learn Light Magic?

In any case, once I get some money I'll definitely learn both disciplines. I just blew most of my cash on buying some new offensive spells (Fireball and Fireblast for my Sorc and Rockblast for my Druid). Maybe I'll take another stab at the Archer promotion quest. I've got everyone but my Archer promoted, it seems like the toughest one (the easiest being Cleric).

You can learn them both in Blackshire. Just remember to master light magic first then dark because of the reputation change like WTF posted before.
I didn't think that the archer promotion quest was that hard at all though I can't remember at what level my party was. But there is a part where you can get overwhelmed when you open the doors to the middle section in the Keep so watch out.

Well my guys are only around levels 10-11, so it's not necessarily that it's hard as much as it is hard in comparison to the Sorc, Druid, and Cleric ones, which were all really easy.
