What good are they, or how can you use/sell them?

Gems are used for and consumed by casting spells, when selecting a spell for casting you can see two numbers, one for the spell points needed and one for the gems needed.
There are also some locations where you can trade them for very useful things so if you have more than you need it's worth paying them into the bank to earn interest.
