I'm level 8 and my knight, paladin and archer all attack twice per round...
No he won't.
Yeah, extra attacks are only for knights, archers and paladins I'm afraid.
Well, my thief is equally worthless in melee or ranged combat then.

Anybody ever managed to beat the game without one? Bashing doors and just taking the damage from treasure chests every time? I could sure have used a second sorcerer in combat...

You know, my first attempt at playing through I tried to do this, but it got really ugly less than 5 levels in so I gave up. Some traps are just horrendous. Robbers are clearly for utility over combat in MM1. You just have to make the best out of them.

There are a few thief-specific items that can help with that a little, but yeah, overall they're a bit worthless in fights.

I've never tried playing the game without one... it might work OK for some things, but I think you'd probably miss out on some of the best items. The traps on the high-quality chests are pretty nasty and can sometimes take out the whole party.

In MM2 and beyond, you can take a Ninja instead of a Robber... they're thieving skills are not quite as good but they're decent fighters. Of course, most people prefer to import their MM1 characters into MM2, but you could always swap out your robber for a ninja in MM2 if you were so inclined (while keeping the rest of your original party).
I most likely won't import my characters into MM2, considering they lose all items and most levels and their HP are re-calculated (their HP is far lower than what I had at level 6 in MM1)

Not sure about getting a Ninja yet, but I probably will pass up on the barbarian (from what I've read, they're far from being the monsters they became in MM3/4/5

Your imported characters will take less of a hit if you actually win MM1 with them before you import. I'm not sure about the HP scaling but I'm pretty sure that my imported characters' stats stayed pretty high... anything above 20 was set back to 20 I think but it still was a much better stat roll than I would have gotten if I started new characters (many of them were basically 20s across the board if I remember correctly).

And starting at level 7 or whatever it is is still much easier than starting at level 1.
