In the citadel in B3 I was mapping and exploring. I went down a particular hall and a (sable & white) statue spoke to me and said "Congratulations you have completed a major quest! Remember B.J."

1 - Uhh. I'm pretty sure my current quest was to kill the ghost pirate. What quest is this?
2 - Was I supposed to know to search? I did so out of confusion.
3 - The cluebook suggests this relates to the Brothers. I can see how i needed to get their clue to get in here but... how .. does this.. link to .. anything?
4 - Did the dog give me a B.J?

If this will make sense later, well.. okay I'll keep my notes.

This one confused me a bit too. You DO need to search the area immediately afterwards. If you have already moved off of the square then there is no way to get the item that is there and desecrating the statue won't do the trick, either. When I encountered this issue I had to repeat all of the actions from the beginning of the quest chain, i.e. deliver the scroll and on up to finding the brothers again, finding the whistle again, etc.

This was annoying but didn't really take that long since my characters were a higher level and I could just fly everywhere. Once you get to the statue and get the experience again, be sure to search immediately afterwards.
FWIW, I did search and get the item the first time. Mostly just because
"What? why? how? huh? what if i search?"

I still don't really have any idea why finding a dog-statue was quest-worthy. No one asked me to do that, and I certainly wasn't particularly interested in that.

As far as I know, the only "clue" to this quest is on one of the statues in Sorpigal. And it's not a quest in the same manner as the lords' quests. It's actually related to the main plot of the game (you may not have realized there WAS a main plot, since everything in MM1 is so vague). You will find a use for that item later and it will make a little more sense.

A little.

Huh? The statue of a priest mentioning the brothers is the only one that seems relevant; it certainly doesn't suggest I need to find a dog.

Yeah, it's not much of a hint. I guess you're just expected to follow the trail from there.

I may be remembering wrong, though, there might be other hints for this in the messages you find scattered around.
There are some hints in Castle Doom which suggest that the dog has what you need.
