Are you in windows mode? If so, then this works for more than just me. If not, than maybe I was jumping the gun. Hope this helps you. No patches needed. No strange files required. Hope you enjoy your game, I spent way too much time as a kid playing this, and I plan on doing it again... Right now.

You can get windowed mode working with 32-bit color by using the GrayFace MM7 Patch.

Worked like a charm, mate. I'd like to buy you a mug of 16-bit beer!

I tried that before I found this thread and had a lot of problems. The instructions here got me to window mode, but now I want to raise the resolution. I tried using MMResTool027fix2.zip with grayface, but had issues. Now I thought I'd ask before I tried that because I've already spent 2-3 hours on this.

I can't get MM7 to runin 16-bit mode at all - perhaps because it's stuck in Win95 compatibility mode and it won't allow me to undo that.

That part is not a problem for MM6 or MM8, but I still can't get either to run in windowed mode. MM6 gives me only a partial screen in the corner of the window, and MM8 wont' give me the window at all.

I had the same problem with MM6. Try exiting the game while still in windowed mode and then restart it.

When I do this, it gives me the window sort-of. It is a non-movable window surrounded by a black screen, and while I can move things behind it they are invisible as being behind the black screen. So it kinda works, but not fully.
I tried it for MM7, and I get the window, but only only the left half the window shows the game, while the right side is black, and the buttons are all still as though in the whole window. So I get the window, but it doesn't function so I can play the game that way.

Also, I can't run in Hardware Accelerated 3D, so perhaps that's the problem. According to the setup file, "[t]his device does not support D3D hardware acceleration. Might and Magic® VII must be run in software mode." I have no idea what to do about that.

P.S.: This worked perfectly for MM8.

Further update: won't actually work even in the defective window ... once I click out, when I click back in, it tells me it needs to be in 16-bit color (32k or 64k), then shuts the game down.
An update for those having problems on windows 10:

You actually can change the compatibility settings if you're a admin. Click 'change settings for all users' and then set the compatibility to windows 7 for both. Follow all other instructions.

Thanks so much. I was banging my head on my keyboard trying to figure out what I was doing wrong.

I just tried this on my work PC, however right now I still have admin rights. Using Windows 10 64bit

I followed the OP's steps but didn't check the run as administrator box, as I will be losing those rights - I'll edit my post today to see if it stops working or not.

Currently works windowed as long as mm7setup is used to launch the game.

Might be able to work around by using my personal computer to 'apply settings to all users', but I've no idea if that would work.

------------------------------------------------------------

EDIT: Just tried this on the old PC set as a local user. Found a few things.

No matter what i've tried, if opening mm7.exe even after changing the settings in mm7setup, it will open full screen after flashing a window.

--If I set it to compatibility mode for windows 7, it will then let a pop-up alert for my screen resolution in front of the game, clearing it resets the view and it goes all wonky (that half screen, goofy color deal you get if viewing desktop then opening the running game back up).

Settings for compatibility mode will *not* persist when moving the flash drive to a new PC.

Running mm7setup.exe requires administrative rights.

It looks like I'll have to try the grayface patch mentioned above.
