Try updating your video card drivers

Thanks for the tip - but ive got the latest driver.
What's the graphics card? Does your setup support 800x600 resolution? That's what it starts up at I think.
I had this same problem. Run the "configure.exe" program in the game folder. A window will pop up (which is in German, for some reason). Click OK, and try to start the game again.
I had the same problem, did what Deaddove said and now it works perfectly. Thanks!

The only time I have had this problem is when I have loaded the game in a resolution my monitor does not support. You restart the game in safe mode and start again... or thats what I use to do.

Edit: I just loaded the game on my laptop and it's a completely different problem then I suspected. It works fine on my home computer though.

Thanks a lot for all your suggestions. I ran the configuration-tool, and it is indeed somehow starting - but then it stops reacting, so i have to manually close it via ctr-alt-del :(.
I have the same problem.
My graphic card drivers are up to date and the config isn't working, too.

I've had the same problem with Elite Force II, which I was only able to run on the lowest resolution.

Here is my sytem if this helps:

HP Compaq 6715s
CPU: AMD Turion X2 TL-58 @ 1.90GHz
RAM: 2GB
Graphics: ATI Radeon X1200 Series (shared graphics)
Win Vista

Every help is really appreciated.

Hhhmmm seems it's not working for the Germans.

The US and EU versions are forbidden to be distributed in Germany because they contain symbols which are regarded as unconstitutional (e.g. swastika). For the German version the developers had to remove any appearances of swastikas. Most of them are replaced with an Iron Cross. Additionally in the level "Scuttling the U-529" all Hitler salutes were removed.

I know that the original Commandos game (sold on GOG) does not work on computers set to German. To play them you have to set the region settings in Windows to English or German (Luxemburg). Worth a shot?

Either that or try manually setting the screen resolution in "unnamedsoldier.cfg " in the \main\configs folder.

*EXAMPLE*

r_customwidth "1920"
r_customheight "1080"
r_mode "-1"

The games are known for chucking errors because of screen resolutions.

Although, it seems your having trouble with the Quake 3 engine.

What I found also works is starting it in safe mode and then making your video/audio adjustments on the in-game menu. With MOHAA (don't know about Spearhead or Breakthrough yet) I found the max res I can get without it crashing is around 1024 x 768 which I believe was the highest res you could get when the game was first released in 2002 (someone correct me if I'm wrong). After that I was able to place all other graphic and audio options on their highest setting. Hope that helps :) .
Thanks for alle the in-depth suggestions - but even the safe mode is not working. strange
Not working for me as well...giving me the classic "encountered an error" pop-up on XP. I should note that I am running it through VM software (Parallels 8) on my 2012 Macbook Air.

I just pasted that error into Google and it seems to be a problem with the Quake 3 engine. Other games that run on that engine are also getting the same error. The solution seems to be either 2 things:

A) Graphics card drivers
B) Setting a resolution the game can handle.

With the resolution, Try setting r_mode to 4 and setting r_displayrefresh to 0 in the unnamedsoldier.cfg. It should set the game to 800x600 or try a custom resolution of 800x600. If that doesn't work try deleting the unnamedsoldier.cfg (back it up first) an run it again.

Also on Vista/7 are you running the game as administrator? It might not be able to write to config files if you've installed into the default program files.Try right click on the shortcut ---> Run as admin
