abbayarra: Is tropical 1.38 ready for prime time? Which mod should I go with for Moo3? I'm looking for true to original intent as possible.

JosEPh002: Down load Bhruic's MoO3Patcher and the Patches that are Listed as patches. There are Some that are listed as Mods.

There is a >DLL 1.67 that Must be installed 1st before you can apply any patch. The .DLL makes the patches usable.

The Location for getting this MoO3Patcher is. LINK is Bad.

This system fixes all the major "bugs" that Quicksilver and Atari let ride thru. It makes MoOIII enjoyable and very playable for those that did not give up on III. It is also the base for all the Mods posted/talked about here in previous posts.

I personally have a Mod listed at The Master of Orion Guardian site http://www.moo3.at/ . It is called the Random Gov't mod. Many of the Mods posted about are also found at the Guardian. Plus many of the early Mods for III. Otsego's Diplomacy Mod is a Must have. His Otsego 0.85 is also a very good Mod coupled with using bhruic's Patcher.

Been playing and modding MoOIII for 13 years now. Was a very active AtmoO forum member for almost 7years (before Atari pulled the plug on us! :( )

The Gog version here will take all these Mods and the Patcher. When I upgraded to win 10 x64 my original CD set would not work. So I bought Gog's version and put it to the test. Works just fine on win 10 x64.

I have the latest version of Bhruic's MoO3Patcher saved on my google drive:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1XxQkK-nzE6wo74LYESjoQtowVopxlKqp/view?usp=sharing

It has very limited info about mods and how different things in MOO3 works, so for that you can use archived version of Bhruic's original site:
https://web.archive.org/web/20120626155507/http://bhruic.dyndns.org/patcher/index.php
(You need manually copy-past it)

Some of the downloads on this archived site is still works too.

I took some notes as I worked through applying the mods, I'm posting them in case they help others, although I really don't have much to add to what apierion posted.

edit: I'm apparently too new to post links, so you'll have to dig them out of the thread above.

I'm happily playing the latest and greatest Tropical, up to turn 80 with no problems and just one UI glitch that can be worked around.

Like the first post says, I installed the Gog version, which is patched up to 1.2.5 already, so no need to worry about the official patches.

I got "UOP_Tropical _V1.3.10.zip" from danielboro's mediafire.

As he wrote, 1.3.10 is later than 1.38, which would be 1.3.8 under a consistent naming convention. And both are later than 1.21 etc.

I also downloaded "partoftrop.1.3.11update.zip", which just has 4 text files in it.

The Tropical 1.3.10 zip includes Bhruric's patcher and DLL. The patcher is v0.52, the latest I've found, but the DLL is 1.65.

Anyway, both are later than what's on the Bhruric's (hamburg) site . It has patcher v0.51 and DLL 1.60, so that's all older than what's included in Tropical and I ignored it.

I played around with stuff from melighos' google drive, but in the end didn't use it. It has a version of the dll that reports itself as 1.67, but the versions of the patch files from melighos were all the same as the versions included in the Tropical zip, so I couldn't figure out what 1.67 updated. In the end I stuck with the packaged stuff. I might try another game with the only1.67 dll from melighos but everything else from the Tropical zip next, just to see if I can notice any differences.

Before running the patcher, I expanded partoftrop.1.3.11update.zip and copied those 4 text files over the ones from Tropical 1.3.10.

When applying patches, I applied all but these five:
AllStars
AlliedVictory
RandomEvents
RetreatTimer
WindowMode

The rest all seems to work fine. The SystemDefenseTF prompted for a numerical setting when applied, I took the default.

Tropical changes the tech school names to things like "B: Empire" and "W: Beam". I found the B: and W: confusing and found where they were in the text files and modded them out so my school names are Empire, Beam etc.

The font the game was using was interpolating badly on my display, so I tried two font mods, Uzi's and Archangel_Brians. Both are available from www.moo3.at. Both were an improvement on the default. Uzi's replaces some of the UI fonts with italic fonts. They look fine to me, but if that's not to your taste use Archangle_Brian's set.
You can go back and forth just by applying the other one over top of the first, there's one file (fonts.txt) that controls which of the font files gets used. You can, as I did, keep renamed copies of the fonts.txt file from the two mods so I can swap back and forth just by copying either control file over top of fonts.txt. No big deal.

I started to add the Battle at Aruspex mod (aruspexV2.08.zip) but in poking around to see what it modified, most of the files it was adding seemed to be already in Tropical and the same (with the exception of a couple files that would end up directly in the main folder with moo3.exe). So I skipped it, even though I couldn't determine from the Tropical readme that it was in fact included in Tropical.

Nothing else seemed needed - Tropical 1.3.10, part of 1.3.11 and a font mod and you're good to go.

The only UI glitch I have noted so far occurs on planet display with the Military Info and Demographic info submenus. When I close them, a blank window (narrow but tall) is displayed for 30 seconds but then closes on its own. You can just wait it out, but I'm too impatient. I alt-tab out and back in and that gets it to clear. So far no freeze-ups as a result.

On various screens the "Hard Scrabble" fertility name is too long and wraps to two lines and isn't displayed well. I'm thinking of changing that name in my version to something like "Marginal" that's a little shorter. Haven't found the .txt file spot yet.

I learned that if you save a game, no changes you've made that turn are saved, it's only saving the game as of the beginning of that turn. I probably once knew that was the way moo3 worked, long long ago. So save right after hitting the turn button and playing through the combats and stop right there if you need to do something else.

Thanks to all who've made moo3 great.

For the UI glitch try to change the speed setting in "UI animation setting"

Thanks, that does in fact fix it. I'd read some posts about that, but somehow it didn't sink in that the problem I was seeing was the same as the posts were reporting. Thanks, that eliminates an annoyance.
I played to past turn 200 with this mod, tech level 50 achieved.

There is some kind of a bug with spies. A spy can get messed up so that it is stuck in 'recall' or 'insert' and just keeps repeating each turn what it did the prior turn. It can be worked around by retiring the spy, but sometimes that just screws up a different one. It's minor overall, I've never had more than one screwed up spy at a time, and you can just ignore them as they play their 'groundhog day' act over and over.

A more significant problem may be due to my chosen ship designs. They often retreat immediately, without firing a shot, because they can't see the opposition while the opposition has unleashed a hail of missiles. This works in both directions though, as I found a tactic is to create a bunch of one-shot missile platforms and send a lot in at once. If there is a defending planet, they'll shoot everything at it and bug out, but the missiles keep flying and still hit and can wipe out ships that weren't visible for targeting when the missiles were launched, or at least hit the planet and take out its beam bases, etc.

So I got into a stalemate position where my ships keep running away from all the battles.

Then the 'space port nerf' tech added by the mod kicked in, and all of a sudden a few of my biggest and best planets are broke and destroying revenue producing buildings due to insufficient funds to maintain them. Something's not balanced correctly with that mod. I'm bored with MOO3 for now, but if I ever come back to it, I'll delete those 'nerf' techs from the table. They were intended to fix a problem like what I've been having, but appear to either not work or maybe make it happen earlier.

How did you get the patcher to even work, I keep getting a series of .DLL files missing exceptions.
Thank you guys for this awesome list.
I am happy to know, that in the next years to come, there is a safe place for those patches. I need them! :-)
But unfortunately, there is not everything.
Otsego's Diplomacy Mod is something I never heard of before, where could I get that?

By the way:
What I just this year, 2022 found out: the Autoname feature enables us to rename the ships to our needs. Did not know this up to now:
I always were confused with i.e. Lancer (Lcr) and Light Battlecruiser (LCr).
Now I name it totally different, and it is even shorter!
For Instance I use ":" inside the name to show it is Starbound, if its an Orbital, it gets an O to it, and if it is a starship, it does not need that at all, because :O or just : show me it is Starbound.
The Size begins at 0 for Lancer, and ends with Leviathan at D (Hexadecimal).
At the End comes the turn it was created. No upging numbers right from the start, good readable Shipnames that are short!
So it reads for instance
3:O.Rak.15 for an Orbitak, Hullsize Frigate, Indirect Fire (Rocket, Gernan Rakete), created on Turn 15

Another good thing is ability to change the scroll speed of the mouse!
What always annoyed me, was that in a full sitrep or the planetary list (populated with hundreds of planets) that by scrolling with the mouse wheel, one line was jumped over.
With the following settings for me it works very good.
It also changes the speed of the galaxy movement, so you have to take care here a bit..
And as a side note here: The mx master from logitech has an awesome mousewheel with inertia. Just push it in one direction, and it scrolls for itseld with a metal mouse wheel. Very useful, for many things!
So, here are the two numbers i changed in the
Moo3Prefs.ini:
from MapScrollingSpeed=50 to MapScrollingSpeed=100
MouseWheelSensitivity=4 to MouseWheelSensitivity=1
and now it scrolls much slower.
YESSS - have fun with the game and thank you so much for these awesome patches.

Another good thing is: most of it is easy changeable.
So right now I am changing many sitrep and tech pictures, because some pictures are just bad.
If you look under the hood of the game, you see that they had much more in mind but were pushed to finish it..
So, someday maybe I will also release that graphics set.

one thing that still is hard to find out, is the readability of the opponent in the spcae combat screen.
I can barey read it. So is there someone out ther who knows what grafic is deciding the background?

also another question: how do you remember where the guardians are? the name and enemy of the system is not saved when you leave it..

and again my question: who has Otsego's Diplomacy Mod?

Another last word:
I could not stand to look at the fonts.
I made up a special pack.
For those that are interested:

tt0047m_.ttf -> that is NewsGoth BT
isocpeur.ttf -> that is ISOCPEUR
cour.ttf -> that is Courier New
isocpeur.ttf
tt0009m.ttf -> that is Swis721 Cn Bt

put them in the fonts.txt in the font directory.

In the fonts.txt it has to look then like this

tt0047m_.ttf
isocpeur.ttf
cour.ttf
isocpeur.ttf
tt0009m.ttf
