I am not sure if this applies to all games, but from what I have experienced, when a game reaches a trilogy, its in trouble. MOO and MOO2 are awesome games. Lots of fun. You were not burdened with too many issues. This was a complete disaster. I've had the same experience with StarControl 1 and 2. They were incredible games especially SC2. However, SC3 was so horrific, I think I threw the disc away. Fallout 1 and 2 were great games. Fallout 3 for some reason disappointed me.

I like to call this the Godfather syndrome.
Unfortunately many games series suffer from this but a few like for example HoMM3 manage to escape this.
