I tried searching all over for threads that could help, but either I'm just not up to speed on the technical know how to make it work or I missed something helpful.

I wanted to introduce two friends to the game, because it's awesome, so I bought them both copies. They are both mac users (at least for the time being) so I need to get this to work cross platform. I'm unsure how to set up a server or use an ip address in this context. Some of the commands I found on the net just didn't seem to work in cmd and doxbox.

Any help would be immensely appreciated.

Are you guys trying this on a LAN? See here. If this is over the internet additionally you likely want some sort of VPN or Gameranger (not sure if that's working cross platform though).
I wanted to set up games over the internet. Gameranger isn't cross platform. Will have to check out Hamachi I guess. Any other advice?

Force yourself to manage to read a themes with "orion" & "multiplayer" at least on this certain forum, and this certain page of it, not even mention of trying to using google.com.

Understand your networking and set firewall rules appropriately. :p If possible try and test a LAN setup first, even Windows to Windows, as it will be much easier to troubleshoot. You will need to adjust the port to what the Mac version is expecting.

Sadly, I haven't yet ceased to be amazed by people who choose to be condescending instead of helpful. If you thought my query so pointless and obviously resolved, assume I have the sense to read other threads from the forum within which I am posting and move on. Also, don't be a moron. It's google. EVERYONE KNOWS WHAT IT IS.

I already looked though several of the threads which you cryptically and cynically alluded to. Spoiled as I am on modern multiplayer and priorities that do not require encyclopedic knowledge of everything PC related from DOS onwards, I wasn't able to gather the information I needed, and was unable to solve my problem. Maybe all I needed was someone more knowledgeable than I to help filter out what's irrelevant and guide me towards what's useful. Alas, the MoO2 multiplayer community and live chat I found online proved similarly ineffectual.

Now then, I propose a most excruciating challenge to you! Now that your one tried and true piece of advice has proven to be comically unavailing, can you help a stranger from across the nether actually get something done? Who knows, I might even *gasp* thank you for it.

Hmm... it's frustrating, because any information people have offered has just seemed really vague to me, but I do have a macbook I could use to troubleshoot, so there's an idea. I haven't had to mess with ports in ages. Hopefully these annoyances will be small.

Thats up to you. The amount time and effort you spend on writing that angry reply would been quite enough to solve the actual problem instead. If you really want to play some old DOS game in modern multiplayer enviroment - you need to spend some time to learn about it. Its about 5-10 minutes anyway. As there is not a problem in multiplatfom multiplayer for moo2, id propose to repeat the steps you already done. The stuff you want to achieve is very easy to do, and as you somehow managed to fail there - the mistake should be very easy to fix.

I'd sure like to think so : P
If it's so easy to resolve though, how come you didn't post a solution yourself?
Ok, I got the game to work between my macbook and PC. Progress! I'm not sure this strategy will apply to cross country multiplayer though.

PC-Host
Mac-Client (Typed in ip address followed by the port)

I'm guessing I'll need a VPN to get this to work for my more distant friends. Have you any recommendations? I heard good things about gameranger, but according to the Gameranger site it doesn't support MoO2 games cross platform.

Not really as it isn't something I've ever tried.

Why you proposed VPN then, for a start?

It's one of the ways to have LAN games work over the internet? Typically without having to worry about individual ports for each game to be opened. It's hardly the only way however.

Ok, i just was confused with recommending to use VPN first, then saying you never tried it. Surely it will work, thought not really needed in this certain case.

Any luck with getting it to work? I'm trying to connect a Mac and a PC over the internet but when it gets to the IPX Tunneling screen it always says failed to connect.

I've been looking around these forums and elsewhere, and I can never find any clear instructions. Something about Port Forwarding, but again, nothing step by step. No idea what to do.

EDIT:
Wow Okay. So here's how I got it to work, for those interested. Maybe I'll make this a separate post too?

Hosted on my Mac. I set my Airport router to forward port 213 (Public UDP) to 2130 (Private UDP) and put in my Mac's local IP address under Private IP Address. You can find your Mac's local IP address by going to System Preferences - Network and it'll be the IP that shows on that page. It'll say something like "Connected to the Internet with the IP address: 10.0.2.11"

Then find your Mac's public IP by going to whatismyip.com and give the IP to the PC user. They type that into the client join screen. And that's it.

I can clear anything up if something isn't clear.

Yeah I'd like to try to set up a game with you to make sure I've got this down.
