chuser: And what I call "tedium" is apparently what you call "fun"
And there's your answer. If you don't appreciate the challenge of crushing your opponents the most that you possibly can, and then to play again in order to try and top even that, or to see if you can do it again with a completely different build, then that's it. Some people just want the "Achievement unlocked: game completed" and then it's on to the next challenge.

To put it another way, I hate shooters. What some (most?) people call a fast-paced edge-of-their-seat thriller, I call an invitation to carpal tunnel and vertigo. Does that make me wrong? No; it puts me solidly in the minority, but opinions like this in and of themselves are neither wrong nor right.

It's the same for you. You don't enjoy playing this game for any longer than it takes for you to clearly win. That's your playing style; and it's just as valid as mine or anyone else's.

TwoHandedSword: and it's just as valid as mine or anyone else's.
Except mine, which is first among equals. No bias here. Nope. Nada. Beware the Ides of September.
I don't think it's fair to say summoning Wraiths with an 11 Death book build is a speed run or somehow against the rules. It's perfectly well within the rules, just like all the Artificer/Runemaster builds are well within the rules.

I understand what you're saying about tedium though. At some point the game becomes tedious for me, too, but until then I enjoy building an aesthetically pleasing empire: selecting exceptionally good city locations, connecting them with roads, and all that stuff.

Eventually I say, "Okay, I've had enough." Either I cast the SoM or I finish off any remaining opponents.

My point about Death remains though; if you think anything other than victory by the swiftest means is tedious and wasteful, 11 Death is the way to go. Why waste time with anything else?

Nobody is saying this except you. It's not about the swiftest possible victory. It's exaggerating the premise to say you should only play a well-known degenerate strategy. It's about achieving a winning position, and then deliberately choosing to keep the game going instead of winning.

UniversalWolf: If your goal is simply to win as fast as possible, 11 Death is better than anything else. As soon as you finish summoning your wraiths, the game is over. It's not even that fun, frankly.

The next most powerful is probably 11 Chaos books. You'll have armies of Hellhounds swarming everywhere in no time.

After that I'd say some of the Artificer/Runemaster builds, which are indeed very powerful.

Then there's a morass of many different builds which are all viable. I think I've tried most of them at one time or another.
I have to disagree, 11 life with invulnerable blessed Guardian Spirits is the most powerful and quick way to win in my humble opinion.
The others are a bit slower to develop.

chuser: I get the idea some people just like to build a winning position and then just play it forever, instead of knocking out all the other civs and winning the game.

TwoHandedSword: In fairness, some of us like to challenge ourselves as to who can achieve the most points at game's end. You do so by building or taking over as many cities as possible, growing them as large as you can, learning as many of your opponents' spells as you can (preferably by defeating them, letting them return, and defeating them again, until they have nothing left to teach you), acquiring fame (including legendary heroes), and only then casting the Spell of Mastery.

My personal best is over 8,000 points (see screenshot), and there's still room for improvement. 9K isn't unreasonable, though 10K might be stretching it a bit. But hey, what's life without goals?
Using the artificer/runemaster combo and conquering the opposition quickly leaving just one surrounded and unable to expand.
I managed over eleven thousand by using nature to make all land inhabitable and bullding cities on every square inch by 1424..

I am officially impressed. And now I know where the bar's been set. Kudos.

I hadn't even heard of that technique before. I'll have to give it a try. Thanks.
Hello all.

Been playing 1.51 for the past few days and I've had several lock ups. Is there any debug information I should acquire that would help debug these problems?

Also I've noticed that the loot for nodes in Myrran have changed. You don't seem to be able to hardly get books anymore. Was this deliberate? Is there any way to go back to the old percentages?

You'd better ask there, Seravy is the mod author.

BTW, there is 5.03 already :) Yes, you should just unzip CoM5.03 archive file somewhere (it has CoM5.03 folder inside) and then copy CoM5.03 folder content into your MoM folder, saying YES for files replacement.

As for me, I created TWO separate MoM installations, one called Master of Magic is for original game with 1.51 unofficial patch (by the same author as CoM - Seravy), and the other called Caster of Magic is for the mod.

Well, I don't use Galaxy so I can't give you any further advice, sorry. I have absolutely no problem with regular (distributive) installation.
It seems the issue is in Galaxy.
