Let me say that the game looks and feels good but i feel a little bit that i played it already. So far i am not to deep in the game but is my assumption correct or am i mistaken?
It has very little in common with Portal. Magrunner is humorless, the physics is stilted and after the "test chamber" gameplay ends about 1/3 into the game the narrative and the gameplay no longer makes sense. In both Portal 1 and 2, once you left the test chambers to go your own way through the environment you actually had the illusion of breaking the rules and of doing things that wasn't intended. Magrunner on the other hand, which also focuses on the protagonist leaving the test chambers for new environments, still has to go through very obviously set up puzzles even as he is exploring heavily damaged ruins. Even when you go out into a completely alien environment the puzzles are still laid out in plain sight as if intentionally designed which doesn't make any sense in the narrative.


Still, it is a very decent game worth playing.
I think it is not a portal clone. It has some original ideas and stages but it is not cup of my tea. I just tried it because it was given free. I think the games that are completely about puzzles are not for me

I think thats why i liked about Portal. It was fun to play.
This game on the other hand feels somewhat cold. Everything in the game reminded me about Portal in a way but i am way to early to judge the game since i only played a little into it.
To be honest I thought it was like a lifeless Portal wannabe. But on the other hand I love everything that has to do with Lovecraft and the Cthulhu mythos so... Yeah, I finished the game and I actually enjoyed the story (the few parts that make sense and the ending). But for anyone who doesn't like the work of Lovecraft, this game is not for you. There are several parts where I could actually get some background info because of my previous knowledge of the mythos but otherwise I would have simply stared at the screen with a blank face or simply give up on the game. And now I just discovered that Dagon is a boss fight in The Witcher so I'm so excited about getting to that part :D (I knew those swamp people worshiping the water lords (aka the deep ones) were at least inspired in the mythos :P).

I don't think so. The odd dialogue near the end was rather fitting. The protagonist is hiding something even from the player! The problem is the extreme discord between the gameplay/what the player is experiencing and what the characters are experiencing. All the characters are very emotional and freaked out, but the player rarely encounter actual danger in the gameplay. The horror in the game is non-existant, but the characters behave like it is ever present.

The greatest discord between gameplay and story is in how 2/3 of the game take place outside of the controlled experimental environment. In the early part of the game the carefully planned puzzles make sense. Once everything starts falling apart and you leave the test areas it doesn't seem very likely that you would find puzzles set up wherever you are going. You could argue that cthulhu set this up through his agent but that is an extreme plot contrivance to motivate the gameplay.

The story, however interesting, is in the wrong game entirely!

Maybe, but, if not for YT, I would spend hours trying to kill Xander and without success, because there is very little close to nothing suggesting that player must destroy pillars. Of course, once everything has fallen apart there was no hints how solve the puzzle, but then it was rather obvious - reach the exit door or, later, portal. Maybe there was some last minutes cut from game or I missed something as wikipedia says that there is Spawn of Cthulhu coming out of Gate. Well, didn't saw any Gate, not mention the monster. Only Xander standing on pretty much empty platform.

I was able to solve quite a few of them outside of the runs I found online. Granted some are black and white but for the most part i was able to do what i wanted.... or maybe it was the illusion of control... Regardless its the most fun I had since portal and I felt it was more rewarding. Have played though twice now... which is more than I can say for portal 1 and 2.

It's definitely INSPIRED by Portal, but it's not a clone. There's a well of difference between being inspired and being a clone.
