andreasmaureder: It's not necessary... it's just another solution. Overwriting the files in the sounds/MUSIC folder with this files works fine. And they also should work with the soon™ upcoming languages too.
I uploaded the complete Sound FX and Music DTA files for a few reasons:

1> The game stored the music and sound fx this way originally

2> I didn't think file space and/or download speed was a big concern. I thought people would've preferred the original files taken off the CD.

3> It was just as quick for me to upload the DTA files as it was to do a file by file comparison with something like WinMerge.

4> Now that we have a GOG installer I might not keep my retail discs any longer. It takes two minutes to install the game now and it's updated. This beats running the old installer, inserting each disc, swapping disks, patching the game, playing the game with disc in/cracking game, etc.

It does look like that 90MB zippyshare archive contains just the altered files:
https://pastebin.com/cm489NEb

So it's completely up to you which method you prefer.

I'm asking people to delete \mafia\sounds\* so the extracted files don't override the original music & sound fx stored in the DTA files. You also don't need duplicate copies.

If you've downloaded the DTA files you also have the option of extracting yourself with this tool:

Any chance for the files to be uploaded as regular a 7zip archive? Don't feel too comfortable downloading it as an .exe.

It can be extracted just like a "normal" 7zip archive - just right click and extract to folder or wherever you like.
You don't have to run the executable - I only did that for people who don't have 7zip installed.

I own the ITALIAN version of the game on three cds. I've restored the original soundtrack and I can now play the game dubbed in Italian. I've deleted the sounds folder in C:\GOG Games\Mafia and copied in the same folder the files a0.dta and AB.dta I had on a previous installation. Menus and text remain in English.
I hope it helps since i think it should work on other versions too so owners of physical copies of the game should be able to play the game in their languages.
I had my previous installation on a Windows 7 computer (and I couldn't make it run!). It's not possible to install the cd version on Windows 10 as previously explained by another user.
I can now play the game in ITALIAN, text and audio, thanks to a solution posted by another user, miguel_525. You can find it if you read a post about Czech language in game.
I have deleted the folder "sounds" in the Mafia directory and then copied the files: A0.dta, A1.dta, A2.dta, A3,dta, A4.dta, A5.dta, A6.dta, A7.dta, A8.dta, A9.dta, AA.dta, AB.dta, AC.dta from my previous installation in the same directory.

Trust the user. It's better for the user to figure out what extractor program to use, than to wonder if self extracting archive can be unpacked without running.

Ancient-Red-Dragon: Thanks marcinshaq! You are an international hero!

I have Mafia on disc and it is easily one of the best games ever made.

I hope you have backed up your solution files in lots of places and that you distribute them widely, for if/when the copyright cartel trolls come knocking.

To play Mafia without it's original music would be an atrocity. I mean that literally. All of the music in Mafia is absolutely essential to the player's experience.
True to that.

I still have the CDs Sadly I can't install them on WINE :/

Why not? It's possible to install Windows games in WINE from CDs.
Hello, this is my first forum post but I would like to thank everyone who has posted info on restoring the old music on Mafia. I have never played it but heard great things about it. Wow, what an atmospheric and nostalgic open-world game. I'm glad it was released on GOG and I got the original dat files. Chris N.

marcinshaq: ///First part of this tutorial is for people who already have the original installed on their PC, and second is for people who don't.///

///Steam and original disc versions///

1. First, install Mafia from your disc or go to the directory where you installed your Steam version of the game and download the MafiaDataXtractor from here: https://mafiamods.com/mods/mafia-data-xtractor-modding-tool/

2.
Next, extract the DataXtractor and copy MafiaDataXtractor.exe to the root of Mafia directory where Game.exe is located (Ex. C:\ProgramFiles\Mafia\ or C:\ProgramFiles\Steam\steamapps\Mafia\)

3.
Launch MafiaDataXtractor.exe and select ab.dta - Music from the list. Wait for the program to extract .ogg's

4. Now that extracting is done, you should see a new folder called 'SOUNDS'. Copy the whole thing to where you installed the GoG version of Mafia. Windows will ask if you would like to replace the existing files, say 'Yes'.

All done!

----------------------------------------------------------

///For those who don't have the original disc or the Steam version installed///

1. Install Mafia from GOG.

2. Download this package: https://mega.nz/#!ilYHFI5I!TBkB0e05WxvkO4-_BtVZJkuuNoNIGF8Ac5vpVP3EtMw

3. Extract it and copy the 'SOUNDS' folder to where you installed the GoG version of Mafia. Windows will ask you if you would like to replace the existing files, say 'Yes'.

Enjoy!

EDIT: Thank you @mwnn for the backup link :)
Thank you, marcinshaq :D
I have a question with this fix. You explain that we have to delete the Sounds folder :

If we already changed the original language of the game (in French for exemple), what does it do to the audio sounds/dialogues ?

Is there a way to only change the music and not the others sounds ?

Your probably better off using the ripped music if that's the case:
http://www93.zippyshare.com/v/R4HPmjMg/file.html

Download that and overwrite the files that GOG have ripped.

The DTA files I posted where taken from the English CD's.

This rar file contains two files: a0.dta and ad.dta.
Do I need to simply place them inside the Sounds folder without deleting the folder itself prior to that?
I have deleted the folder and put those files there, but main menu music and others were gone. I have restored them, not a big deal.

The first post is a bit inaccurate; I'm not the author so I can't edit it unfortunately.

I've done a bit of a re-write of my post which makes it all clearer:

Here is the thing:
I have deleted the "sounds" folder. But instead of extracting .dat files inside the main folder, with the rest of the .dat files, I have created a new "sounds" folder, and extracted the files there.
That is what I did wrong.

I think that parts needs to be clarified.

Thanks for the reply, it's all good now. :-)
