Same problem here but with Windows 7, I was just about to make my own thread when I saw yours. I tried various compatibility modes, I tried running as administrator, I reinstalled it, I redownloaded the installer and reinstalled it again, I installed it to a different directory... I'm out of ideas.
Having the same problem in XP. Tried the fix here:

http://www.gog.com/en/forum/king_s_bounty_the_legend/issues_launching

but no luck.

For me, it may be an incompatibility issue as I am on a netbook turned desktop. The readme file warns that note/netbooks may not be compatible and that integrated graphics are not supported.

Thanks, I only had to do the first part.... seems like some kind of issue with automatic configuration not working. +rep for helping us, and here's hoping you find a solution for your computer. =)
I tried that fix also, but it didn't help me. :( I've wrestled this for hours and I can't figure it out. It should work.
ok, I just read the part of the readme file where it says it isn't compatible with laptop computers... Nice to find that out now. There isn't anything that says that on the storefront page. Good thing I only spent $2 on it.

I suspect it depends on the laptop. It runs just fine on my laptop.
Yeah, I'm using a laptop too. But I have an ATI Radeon graphics card, whereas most laptops have integrated ones. That's likely the problem.

We are now in 2017 and the issue is still here, googling the issue and found this thread, doesnt give me much hope on the game , also shows an extremely low survival for long term.
I am using macbookm pro, high sierra also radeon pro 460 4 Gb

I had the very same problem with King's Bounty: Crossworlds GOTY (the screen flickered a few times and nothing more happened).
(using a laptop with a Nvidia GPU, and games uses that Nvidia GPU by default setting)

and I found a fix for this: (it worked at least for me - my game launches and I can play just fine)

- go to %UserProfile%\Documents\My Games\Kings Bounty Crossworlds
- open the file game.ini with an editor
- the first two lines were:
setf ~screenresoultionx 0
setf ~screenresoultiony 0
- change that 0 values to your actual screen resolution and save the file. After this action my game launches just fine :)

in my case (1920*1080 screen resolution - I have an external screen connected to my laptop)
that two lines look like this:
setf ~screenresoultionx 1920
setf ~screenresoultiony 1080

Hi! Thanks, this is very helpfull, but i have an update for those that tried it and nothing changed. When you edit config file, try setting it to 1280 x 1024. You can change resolution to correct one in game's menu.

PS: Make sure you edit 'game' file inside Documents\ and not inside game's actual location (like GOG\Games\KB).

Laptop user with GTX1050 here...it's the same bug in the retail DVD version, GOG has nothing to do with it.
Occurs with external monitor connected.
Solution:
1. set up your laptop screen as primary (only) output
2. launch the game
3. make any changes in the graphics settings in-game
4. exit the game
5. you can now re-enable your external monitor as the primary output
6. game launches fine on the external output (1920x1080@60)

This worked for me with King's Bounty: Warriors of the North. It's 2023 and the game wouldn't start on my laptop which has a 4K display and NVIDIA Quadro T1000 graphics card.

In my case the resolution settings were (NOT the same as the native resolution of my laptop's display):
setf ~screenresoultionx 2560
setf ~screenresoultiony 1440

I changed them to

setf ~screenresoultionx 1920
setf ~screenresoultiony 1080

and the game started without problems. I had played the game on another PC earlier and it has a display with 2560x1440 resolution. The settings came probably from syncing the game data through GOG cloud.

I had the same problem and can confirm that by changing the resolution in the .ini file the game started withouth any issue! Thanks all for this solution.
