GOG just told me this game recieved some form of update, but when I went into the files, I found nothing marked as new. What changed?

According to Judas, it's something in the goodies.

I don't have access to my archives right now, but if I were to guess, I'd say it's the addition of the original short story the game was based on.

Ah that'd be it, for some reason I thought the short story was already included.

Didn't gog used to display a "new" tag next to added extras?

Someone probably forgot to flag it. It's a manual process, AFAIK.

It has been a bloody great addition.

Nice add though! Cheerio.

So it's the short story? Cool, though I got to read it already!! =)
So is the short story full of spoilers for the game? Is the game full of spoilers for the Story? Which one should I enjoy first?

No, bonus features aren't flagged individually since a few months ago, leaving us with this "invisible update" syndrome. It's something they really need to put back in. :S

I'm going to second this question, because I'd probably get around to reading the story first (almost done with game 2 in the Deponia trilogy)

I read the short story some time ago (though I'm getting ready to re-read it again tonight! Thanks, GOG!) and from what I recall there are some major differences between the story and the game -- mostly character development, minor plot details and narration perspective --, but I can safely say you're free to either play the game before reading the story or the other way around without one getting in the way of -- or spoiling -- the other (well, there's some spoiling to be had, but that's inevitable, for obvious reasons).

For... "chronological" reasons, I guess?, maybe read the story before playing the game, but it actually doesn't matter all that much, they're quite standalone experiences on their own.

Excellent! That's what I like to hear. Two well crafted pieces of art that share the same foundations but both stand alone. I'm desperately excited for each, however as a working father there is only so little time to be had for such things. I will get around to the game this year I'd bet. There will be more time for this type of leisure activity once the Stanley Cup playoffs are over.

Yeah, game and story follow different paths, so one doesn't spoil the other.

Great addition, and about time too. Thanks GOG.
I've been holding off on playing the game until I could manage to get ahold off and read the short story. Really exciting that gog has indulged my laziness in this regard! :D
I would say the story will give you more insight into the true motives of the AI than the game does, ultimately, so on those grounds you should read the story before or after the game. This crazy bastard is a fantastic author, either way. I wish there were more adaptations of his work like this game. Fallout's universe is very strongly influenced by A Boy and His Dog, which is pretty cool. Nowhere a straight adaptation but the homages are all over the place.
