...is Homeworld a good, bad, or ugly place to give RTS a try?

I'm not much into micro-management, being a manager at RL, that would then just be more, work :(
That said, when it comes to optimizing crafting, survival, and making sure I have good armor and weapons (and look good most of time! gotta look good... :) Then I get that player mindset where the devil is in the details.

Problem is, of 3 friends who have the game none have more than 10 hrs into in but say its a good/great game.

Thanks

I would say it's kind of like a mix between something like Civilization where you are upgrade / sequentially orientated and an RTS. The story line is rather more immersive than a lot of RTSs too. This game was pretty epic when it came out, so I am not sure what it would be like in 2021 for someone who didn't play it back when it originally released. It's a really good game, but also somewhat unique. There was nothing like it at the time.
