I have a strange problem with this game - it's first game in like twenty years (since some old NES one) I literraly cannot play - after around one hour of the gameplay I'm getting headaches.

Does anybody known what can cause this and/or how to help with that?

I though of maybe turning off motion blur, but I don't see option to turn it off completly anywhere.

Change the resolution? I'm just spitballing because I haven't had this happen, but perhaps you're experiencing some kind of strain and upping or lowering the resolution might help.

Thanks for answer :-)
Might be. I would like to try turnign off motion blur, but I don't see option nor did I find how to do that :(

Hope it helps, I know how annoying it is to have an exciting games that you play because of annoying side-effects.

If it were motion blur though you should have had the same problem with other games, which makes it weird as it doesn't seem like Hollow Knight has a lot in common with old NES games.

Hey let me know if you find a solution, I have the exact same issue with it :(
Well, this kind of inspired me. I hate motion blur in everything and the noise this game was applying was also bothering me (actually, my guess is that the noise may be more inclined to be headache inducing.) Why there isn't a setting to turn this off is beyond me. Anyway, in more recent times I've learned that if you use Unity Assets Bundle Extractor you can sometimes remove shaders (and some other things) and games will still work. Note that sometimes they don't handle this so gracefully and outright crash or have other problems. So far Hollow Knight seems to be working for me though. I removed two shaders, one said MobileBlur and the other said something like NoiseAndGrain and it seems to work fine so far. What's more, it really looks a lot nicer to me. That "grain" static effect was just awful and I hated it. It feels like the game is just much clearer and cleaner looking now. I didn't even realize how much worse the noise makes the game look overall until it was gone, but I knew I hated it. EDIT: Oh yeah, and I saw one that said something about bloom and nixed it too. EDIT2: I think framerates have gone up. It seems to run more smoothly without those shaders...

Anyway, here are the modified files if anyone wants to test: https://www.sendspace.com/file/fykuzm It's just the two files that were modified and nothing else, so you'll probably need to have the same version of the game (the latest one at this time. It says 1.2.1.4 on the download page.) I don't know if any earlier versions might have the same assets files, but I wouldn't assume so. Just extract this archive into the game's data folder. I strongly recommend you backup globalgamemanagers.assets and resources.assets before putting the modified ones in the game's folder because it might just crash at some later point in the game or something. EDIT: 1.2.2.1 update to those two files: https://www.sendspace.com/file/ksktzj Well, I can't do this with every update, but I'm really curious to see if this helps people with problems with the game.

Another thing you might also try is using SweetFX (or Reshade now) to tweak its looks a bit. I'm keeping it mostly simple on mine. I add just a bit of vibrance (0.15 seems to be the right balance between nice looking and not overdoing it by too much) and LumaSharpen. LumaSharpen makes it cleaner and clearer. One thing I'm suspecting is the extreme contrast with the light around the character versus the shadows elsewhere (and just the plain contrast all around between light and shadow) might be a problem for some. Adjusting lift gamma gain somewhat to make lift and gamma slightly brighter (1.1 for example) and maybe even making gain slightly darker (0.9 for example) might help somewhat. Maybe.

Hey, I found this post today, and both of your links are down in the present time, I'm really interested in this fix and I can't find anything similar anywhere else, I don't know if you get a notification for this but I hope you do!
No, I haven't ever seen any way to get notifications for forum posts via e-mail or whatever. By sheer luck I just happened to be looking for something to do with another game entirely and saw the notification icon. Well, I'm feeling lazy about it. I'll just throw together my current ReShade setup along with just those two modified files. If you don't want to use reshade, just don't extract any of the files in the archive outside of the hollow_knight_Data folder. (Or if you want to be able to try and just disable it, you can rename or delete the opengl32.dll and dxgi.dll files that it uses -- I don't know which the game uses since it hits both.) You can edit ReShade settings by editing the SweetFX_settings.txt plain text file in the SweetFX folder (perhaps you might not want the vibrance I added, but I thought this is one of those rare games where raising it actually looks nice -- most need me to actually set a negative value these days.)

I probably shouldn't use SendSpace, but given the nature of this I'm not sure if it's safe or not and would rather keep it temporary. Here's the link for another 30 days or so: https://www.sendspace.com/file/zhbdu3
