Last year when I first bought the game I remember I used to have that problem. The game worked fine but within a couple of hours of gameplay it would crashed, so I gave up and uninstall it. But I reinstall it this year and works beatifully. Also I managed to play in 16:9 aspect radio messing with the video card settings. The game works perfect now. I think they update it recently.

PandoraInVein: I see this is a really old topic, but I still have the same problem. I launch the game using Gameranger to play multiplayer with my brother, but after some time the game crashes. I tried playing alone in single player and it seemed to work fine. At least long enough for me to lose the game.
The first time I played multiplayer however, it seemed to work fine. But I had to reinstall it because I realised I installed it on the wrong drive to start with. Since then, it keeps crashing around 10 mins into the multiplayer game (using Gameranger).
I tried the cmd method but it didn't seem to work for me. I get the following messages:
After typing: "imagecfg -u Heroes3.exe" I get a message:
Heroes3.exe contains the following configuration information:
Process Affinity Mask: 00000001
Heroes3.exe contains a Subsystem Version of 4.0
Image can only run in uni-processor mode on multi-processor systems
Heroes3.exe updated with the following configuration information:
Image can only run in uni-processor mode on multi-processor systems
Image can only run in uni-processor mode on multi-processor systems

And after tying: "imagecfg -a 0x1 Heroes3.exe" I get:
Heroes3.exe contains the following configuration information:
Process Affinity Mask: 00000001
Heroes3.exe contains a Subsystem Version of 4.0
Image can only run in uni-processor mode on multi-processor systems
Heroes3.exe updated with the following configuration information:
Image can only run in uni-processor mode on multi-processor systems
Image can only run in uni-processor mode on multi-processor systems

Is this supposed to happen?
Help?
Those messages you get only say that the Heroes3.exe is already configured to use a single core, imagecfg simply reports that your attempted configuration is already in place. So there is no point in using imagecfg with the newest installer from gog.

I am completely unfamiliar with gameranger, but if gameranger interacts with the game process then it is undoubtedly the source of your problem and I would suggest uninstalling the game, and reinstalling it and see how it works without using gameranger.
Hey guys. I've read some of the thread here, but not all of it.

Me and my friend has some crashing errors while playing the game. We use Hamachi and a few weeks into the game it crash.

It also seems like we can't go to load game and join a saved game. As I enter the game page my friend has hosted it instantly crashes. Has anyone else experienced a load multiplayer crash like this?

It's really annying.

We use Hamachi for multiplier game.

That's interesting! Would you mind telling how? I have an Nvidia card.

Sorry for the late response, it´s been ages since I open gog.com. I found a thread that might help you. I´ve managed to change the resolution on my Ati card. But there´s a lot of different ways to fix the problem if you are a Nvidia user. Hope this helps :)

DoctorGOGgles: Heroes 3 frequently crashed for me on Win Vista 64. Compatibility modes didn't help. Apparently Heroes 3 crashes on modern systems with more than one CPU core (or hyperthreading). To see if this is the problem for you, start the game, open the windows task manager, right click the Heroes 3 Task and set affinity to only CPU 0. The problem with this approach is, that you have to do it every time you launch the game as the setting for affinity is not saved.

The solution to permanentely change the game to only use a single cpu is to patch the Heroes3.exe with the imagecfg.exe tool so that the game only runs on a single CPU core. You can get imagecfg from here http://www.robpol86.com/index.php/ImageCFG Make a backup of the original Heroes3.exe first, since imagecfg changes the file. If you get an error message when trying to apply the patch, move Heroes3.exe to a temporary directory outside of Program Files (since that directory is protected in Vista and Win 7 and can only be written to by an Administrator), then patch the file and move it back.

For me this fixed the crashes. I've been playing for hours without compatibilty mode enabled in Vista 64bit on a Core2Duo. You don't even have to launch Heroes3.exe directly. Using gogwrap.exe works too. Maybe GOG should update their installer with a pre-patched Heroes3.exe.
Hey, I know the post has been a while, but my Heroes also crashes... Can you explain me how to use this "imagecfg.exe" tool?

As far as I can remember, GOG updated their installers for HOMM3 shortly after I've posted about this solution (so, about 8 years ago :-) The game now automatically uses only a single core, so using the imagecfg tool shouldn't be necessary anymore.

If you get crashes, I'd recommend you contact GOG support. They're normally quite helpful in solving technical issues with games.
I am getting a Blue Creen crash whenever I get to the starting menu and basically the moment i touch anything, but always when I try to get into windowed mode or switch window to desktop or anywhere else.

So far this has been the only game doing it and at this point, I wont touch it since BSoD crashes always scare the heck out of me, too bad though, another GoG game I cannot play :(

Did you try to use HD mod?
And I hope that you didn't install the game in Program Files (or Program Files (x86)) directory.
