Obiviously this game seem to feature permadeath.

Can anyone confirm?

If so this without making it optional this just went from 'buying at release' to the 'watch a playthough' category for me.

I don't mind a challenge but my time is too precious for such nonsense, esp. in a _story driven_ game.

For me that sounds awesome, I had no idea of that feature, so thanks for the info. That gives to the experience a realism and tension like no other, absolute inmersion! if you can quick load after each death at the end you go forward without any emotion.

But I know for some people is something bad, because many people today just want the easy way, and another, like you, have no time to repeat sections or even the complete game (I don't have that time either). I suppose that this will be optional, I don't know of course, but usually every game allow the player to choose this kind of features.
I really hope its optional too.
There are plenty of indie rogues with permadeath that sell incredibly well. I just don't think most gamers complaina bout it or don't have enough time to deal with it. If you are that short of time, why play video games at all? You can red a book in a few hours and a movie is just 2 hours!

I found out about this and cancelled my preorder. I really wanted to support this game too, especially since it documents mental illness (sort of), but mandatory permadeath is very retro and anyone with a mental illness that gets to the end of the game and then dies is going to be VERY upset. It's almost like they're trolling people, lol. I mean, stress causes an onset of symptoms in people with schizophrenia and other mental illnesses. Something like that happening, where you die right at the end, and have to start over, is very stressful.

Kind of has me worried how long the game is, too, with mandatory permadeath. I think I'll wait for a sale now, if I do get it.

In any case, the combat can be set to easy (on "automatic" by default is not hard) and it's not a game heavily focused on combat so it's not that easy that you get killed. I don't know how many times you need to die before you reach the permadeath, but I think that if you are skilled enough (this is not Dark souls) and put combat on easy mode, you don't need to care about the permadeath. If you are interested.
So can anyone confirm if the game features perma-death and having to play from the start again?

Without getting into the whole "git gud, games are meant to be hard" debate please. Just confirm or not?

I've played only a few minutes so far, but there is an in-game warning that "Senua's journey is over" if you fail too many times. No indication as to how many is too many, but some reviews indicate that it appears to be a bit random. Might be related to difficulty setting. I only do easy mode, and usually fail at dodging attacks, so I'm sure to die many times over. Will let you know when I get to that point.

Yes, like Marakinta says, the game has permadeath and it isn't optional.

The indicator of how many times you need to die before to get the permadeath, and be definitely dead is a mark, like a necrosis or something like that in the body of Senua, that mark grow everytime her get killed and if the mark reach her head, everything will be over. So that way you can, barely, know how many "lifes" remain to you, but there is not a more clear indicator of that.

Exactly, just made it to this point where "the game" (no spoiler here!) tells that if you "fall too often", no indication if fall means dying in battle or just any death as i'm sure but wont try that you can fall off a cliff and die too.

To me that is the most logical Game Over for this journey as you're following Senua and if she's dead, well good luck. Here was a spoiler but since there is no function for it on the forum i will say just that: Hellheim?!

Apparently the threat of permadeath was a bluff. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JM3sxy21j3k

yes, fortunately

In my book that was the second worst game-related PR stunt ever, seceond only to GOG pretending to have shut down.

Well for that they won't get more than $5 from me. As the devs and the pro-permadeath crowd say: there are consequences for you actions - it works both ways. I have enough games to play until then.

Honestly I wouldn't have cancelled my pre order if I'd have known. Now I have to re-buy it again.
