well, thanks. i guess.

i rather see that the _real_ bugs were fixed: ie. the centering on leader bug. (and others). sent in a support request several months ago, no reply since.
in short: the game does not function as intended with XP, 7 or 8.

Is that a bug that was present back when the game originally came out?

Thanks JudasIscariot for your very prompt response on my ticket, really really appreciate it. I have applied the patch but unfortunately for Alexander it still asks for the CDROM and I can not select any single battle or campagine. Any luck on finding the solution?

Could you write to our Support department again and include every bit of relevant information? Or have you already done so?
Boring GOG patch&DL names. I download again all the game as I only had the GOG patch 2.0.1.17...
Will GOG one day have readable DL names? so we don't DL for nothing.

Does that matter? The game which GoG sells has critical bugs on newer operating systems. Period.
I wonder if anyone actually tried _playing_ the game ???

Mine is working fine. I did not load the cd patch. I just played one battle but no problems so far.
The 'Center On Leader' issue has been a compatibility problem with more modern Windows OSes. Dunno if that can be easily fixed. I just look around for the bobbing flag. Wastes a bit more time scrolling about the map, but since the center on leader button doesn't function, it's all we can do.

I believe there was at least one other feature that didn't work properly due to such OS compatibility issues - an info window pop-up or something, but that one wasn't really needed for play.

The main problem is of course that that bug makes the game a lot less fun to play. Extra problem is that the GOG installer is incompatible with OS's that do not have this bug. (doesnt work on windows2000 for instance)
Essentially making the GOG release complteley broken.

You still use Win2k?! Why?

I'd say the biggest problem is some of the crashes I regularly see. Not really sure what sets them off, but I've yet to make it far in GB:Alexander campaigns without a mid-battle crash or freeze. GB:Hannibal seems to do it less, but it's still there.
Must admit I find the regular crashes more of a problem than the fact that "centre on leader" is broken. OTOH, the original game used to crash quite a lot too, so not sure it's got much to do with the implementation for new op systems.
About the problem of crashes, I followed this advise, posted by Gwahlur in "frequent crashes with Alexander":

"I unchecked the Finish Leader Dialog Box from the Preferences menu in the game and also set alex.exe to run on Windows 95 compatibility mode. alex.exe was the executable causing the crashes. It didn't have compatibility mode on as a default setting, unlike start.bat and the GoG desktop launcher for this game.

Unchecking the Finish Leader Dialog Box was a tip I found from this site:

www.ianm1.plus.com/html/q13questions.html

I didn't move any files to system32 as suggested in the instructions, however."

And it worked for my continous crashes, unless in Hannibal by now, ah! I unchecked the next dialog box too, as advised in the wonderful Ian's gb home page.

Thanks everybody for your informations, I thought the problem was with my OS

I bought all three Great Battle games, Alex, Hanni and Ceasar. Ceasar is the only one giving me problems. The game launches but the game crashes right after a battle loads!

Any fix?
