Hello Everyone,

i am desperately searching for Gothic 2, but without the addon. Every shop only sells the gold-edition, but i read somewhere the gog-gold-edition has an option to select only the vanilla-version to install. Is that true? I already own several gold-editions and would hate to spend another 10$ only to find out i still cant play the basegame.

Thanks in Advance

The GOG version used to allow a choice at installation but it was removed several years ago for some reason. I have heard that at least a couple of GOG buyers have been given a DL link to the old version after they contacted admin,

Yes, you can. Just ask politely GOG tech support. They should have provide you with a link to FTP server and temporary login/password.

Quite right.

Thank you very much! Both of you! I will buy the gold-edition now and open a new ticket.

I already opened one this morning but didnt get an answer yet.

Thanks again and have a nice weekend!
yep keep us updated, would be nice to know if support is still doing this. Also if they do provide the link let us how how it changes the gold version, is it a seperate game, is it a option you choose from the game directory, etc.
Yes you can or could at the time of this post, I spent days trying to get my old copy of gothic 2 classic to work and saw this post - I already had g2 gold here on gog so I asked support and they sent me a link within a few hours.

Im super super thankful for it and I was AMAZED that it didn't take any extra setup to get it running (windows 7 64bit), the file had both classic and NoTR versions. Its a HUGE shame that this isn't the file they give out by default but now I have it on my computer I shall never let it go.

Im going to back this installer file up as many times as I can because I love classic gothic 2.

I hope they continue hosting the file for everyone else who wants it.
I never saw any resolution here, were you able to get the vanilla version installed? I tried twice to play NotR and the first time hit a quest sequence bug on the first quest to go to the monostary, and on my second playthrough I just hit a wall where I couldn't kill anything, everything could 2-3 shot me and it pretty much was not any fun any more.

So, if I could play the vanilla version that would be so great, the expansion pretty much ruins the game it seems...

Didn't he confirm that he was able to get classic to run on Win7 64bit in the post above yours?
"and I was AMAZED that it didn't take any extra setup to get it running (windows 7 64bit), the file had both classic and NoTR versions."

Courtesy of GoG support I got my hands on that specific installer a while back too, but I didn't try to install and get it to run yet.
There's also the huge downside that the installer only contains the english localized version, which - no offense - is just ear-bleedingly terrible.
You can get Gothic II original from Amazon for 4.99 since gog won't let us remove NOTR from our downloads.
There is a an add-on that fully restores the Gothic 2 classic experience (without Night of the Raven expansion)

here you go
https://www.worldofgothic.de/dl/download_230.htm

i played both and frankly Yharkandar feels a bit out of place in a Gothic setting
(Mayan Ruins? in a medieval fantasy Germanic world?)
but honestly Dex is absolutely useless in Gothic 2 classic
and smiting too, you can only forge plain swords which sell for a pittance (100G each)

frankly my favorite add-on of Gothic 2 is Gothic 2: Nostalgic Edition
which adds the jump animation from the first game, adds some Gothic 1 armors into the game
and adds a companion system into the game which i found to be remarkably satisfying

i know it works in German but haven't tried in English yet
https://www.worldofgothic.de/news_2511.htm

it should work since it doesn't add any dialogue into the game, but it does add a free bits and pieces

Is this working for GOG version? I just downloaded and the GOG version is 2.7, and every mod that I can find requires 2.6.

As of December 2020 they are still doing it. You can download an old installer which allowed you to select whether you just want to install the base game or everything. Sadly, this installer is only available for the English version of the game.
I'm also tempted to play Gothic 2, would be my first time ;-)

I finished Risen 1-3 and Elex, on easy to middle difficulty settings. Is Gothic 2 (with the NOTR stuff) really that difficult?

I'd rather play the full version, including NOTR. But only if it is not unplayable difficult.

It's not unplayable but you certainly gotta cheese a lot or power game.

I just got my link from GOG support, very quickly. It's installer version 1.0.0.4. The file is named setup_gothic_2_gold_edition.exe. (2,057,418,133 bytes, checksum 62ca675dafe649497c03fe52de41433f) In the options NotR can be unchecked, but it's checked by default so you need to actually go into the options.

When I started the game on Windows 10 the FMV worked but menu and game were just seizure-inducing flickering. The game was running as I could hear it, just no visuals. I had to set zStartupWindowed in gothic.ini to 1 to make it start windowed and that way it works normally, unfortunately no full screen. I also can't seem to install the system pack or player kit. (button in the installer for those remains gray when I select the Gothic 2 folder) But otherwise, yeah, it's Gothic 2 without NotR.
