So I've seen mentions of this before, but here's an article with more information than I'd seen previously. I dunno, I was super excited for the XCOM FPS, for several reasons, but I would not at all mind a name change. I just wanna shoot aliens in a 1950's-'60's nightmare. The selectable missions and research is just a bonus.
I think this is for the best.
Good, what a horror it was when this was the first thing we heard of a new Xcom related product.
I love the new x-com there could be better base building and research + able to sell what you build and the like but all in all its a solid turn based/RTS strategy game wit room for improvement (I haven't tried the DLCs yet so can''t say what they do;))
Oh that's actually fairly reasonable decision.
I really enjoyed the recent XCOM and wouldn't mind seeing a (well-made) FPS in the universe.
An X-Com shooter was made actually 2 of them X-COM : Interceptor and X-COM : Enforcer I know they don't fit the F part in fps (maybe interceptor a little bit) but they both tanked and I hope no more will be made. Keep the original concept going and expand on that as the latest game and we have a winner;)

Interceptor was a space sim and Enforcer was a 3D arcade shooter. I remember my uncle seemed fond of Interceptor, but I had never heard of Enforcer until '05 or '06. Alliance was going to be an FPS but got cancelled, along with an RTS (possibly TBS) game called Genesis that from the two screenshots looked kinda cool.
The RTS I remember thinking Oh no don't ruin the fun of X-com with frantic motions and fast paced action.
Most of the charm was guiding every single character one at a time and not knowing where the enemy is and suddenly a shot comes out of the darkness or you spot one. the anticipation was fantastic and then when you brought them home every thing you collected could be researched.
All the positions of the aliens offered new info IE navigator gave you info on ships others on different mission types and so on. it was an immense game for its age and still is to this day if you take the new game.
It pretty much is a perfect example of how games have been sort of dumbed down. the visuals are fantastic and the game is good but the amount of engineering, research and management has been heavily reduced to fit today's faster playstyle. That is a huge shame as the better graphics and more management shouldn't be mutually exclusive. Imagine the amount of detail in the first games combined with the good graphics of the new that would be a major hit in my book . And if they even expanded on the old idea instead of reducing it would be game of the century for me.

Indeed. If they actually have an FPS game worth playing, then not pretending it's a follow-up to a very old turn-based series with a cult following has to be a good idea, since fans of the originals would hate it, and people who aren't fans of the originals wouldn't care. Using titles from old games with many fans for new games in different genres is simply a horrible idea. I'm glad it seems someone finally realized that.
A good decision - heck, the new name actually fits a bit better with the retro vibe that they are going for.
Good thing they don't make it X-Com as all X-Com games take part in the near future a 1950's setting seems odd.
Also the entire X-Com franchise has produced only one good game imo, the first one, so this game has a better chance to live up to its own merits if it turns out to be good.
I don't understand why everyone likes X-Com: EU 2012, while it's not the worst X-Com game, I found it hardly interesting, everything seemed to be done on automatic and I had hardly the feeling my input was required (especially on the thinking part), I liked the UFO games more tbh.

So I'm almost done with XCOM, on the final mission I think. I haven't played any of the previous XCOM / UFO games. Are they worth trying and if yes, then which ones?

All three strategy games are worth it in my opinion. they all offer different perspectives (the second is the weakest
) stay away from the 2 I mentioned earlier

The original 3: UFO Defense, Terror From the Deep, and Apocalypse. TFtD is brutally hard. Apocalypse is rather different, but still good. Interceptor is, if I remember my uncle talking about it, a decent enough space sim like Wing Commander, but nothing too special. I played a bit of Enforcer. It's fun, but not really a good X-Com game. Not even a good game, at best it's mediocre. I'd pick up the big bundle with all five games, might as well.
