16 extra content packs coming free for everyone!

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, the RPG epic with a mature, non-linear story drawn from player's decisions, a vast multi-region open world acting like a living ecosystem, dynamic and tactical combat, and stunning visuals, is now available for pre-orders, up to 20% off (including special loyalty discount), on GOG.com! The game comes out on February 24, 2015, but it's today that CD PROJEKT RED & GOG.com would like to announce that it will be followed by 16 DLCs available to all gamers, regardless of their platform of choice.

Why are we doing this? Here's an open letter from someone many of you know quite well already, Marcin Iwiński, co-founder and Joint CEO of CD PROJEKT RED:

We love games. We love collecting them, playing them, and everything connected to that experience. Every time we reach out for a new release, we expect to be taken care of. We expect support if we encounter any problems, we love updates constantly improving the experience, and we feel really special when we receive free content that gives us more than we initially paid for. It doesn't have to be huge, it can be an awesome skin for a character, or an extra sword, or armor.

Unfortunately this treatment is quite rare these days. As gamers, we nowadays have to hold on tight to our wallets, as surprisingly right after release, lots of tiny pieces of tempting content materialize with a steep price tag attached. Haven’t we just paid a lot of cash for a brand new game?

As CD PROJEKT RED, we strongly believe this is not the way it should work and, with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, we have decided to do it differently. Cutting to the chase, everyone who buys Wild Hunt will receive 16 specially prepared DLCs absolutely for free, regardless of platform. You don’t have to pre-order, you don’t have to buy any special edition to get them -- if you own a copy of Wild Hunt, they’re yours. This is our way of saying thank you for buying our game.

There you have it, folks! There's very little to add to Marcin's words except: Pre-order today, and prepare for an RPG experience worthy of the best traditions of the genre, and taking it to a whole new level! The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is available up to 20% off, packed with bonus content on GOG.com, and will receive 16 free DLCs after release. Check out the pre-order page for the bonus content details and your local pricing.

HypersomniacLive: Now I wonder what your reason is.

mrkgnao: I can now see a future where a company announces that if you pay her $60 (or $54 or $48) for absolutely nothing you will get a game for free -- and cheering ensues.
Kickstarter. You pay the developers $60 for them to work on a project, and you will (eventually) get a game for free. You are not buying the game after all, you are funding the developers' work.

Edit: Should learn to post and then continue watching the videos, not other way around.

HypersomniacLive: It's already here - that's the concept of crowdfunding.
I tend to think of crowdfunding as pre-order (with a risk involved), while this is to me just a PR stunt. But I'm not too familiar with crowdfunding.
I hate "DLC" with a passion but giving it free is the way to go. I assume these were worked on after the game was done or something....because why else call something everyone gets with the game DLC?

There is one thing that is unclear though: how are these incorporated to the game? I don't want to start my game with popups saying "DLC loaded" and then have all kinds of trinkets on my character.

Edit: Oh wait it's after launch? So basically you have to play the game at least twice to experience all the content (probably playing anyway for the choices but still...)

BadDecissions: Let's say that I believe that if they really wanted to put the beard pack in the base game, they could have done so. It might not have been literally cut (i.e. finished, then removed), but I absolutely believe that CDPRed made the conscious decision to leave stuff out of the game so that they could then announce it as DLC.
It all depends on whether the additional stuff is or could be ready in time for the release. Of course the team could have postponed the release once again but that wouldn't sit well with the fans.

BadDecissions: Since any comment that is not gushing praise is being interpreted by some people as "complaining," I might as well restate my position, which is that this is very sill, but harmless. I'm not upset, just kind of bemused.
I too prefer to get the full version of a game rather than having to add extra content later on.
DLC's done right; as opposed to "obvious cash grab even on day one"

I still don't understand why not integrate them into the main game, but... I don't really care.

I love you guys. keep doing this and I may end up preordering/buying on release (I'm usually the one who waits 'till a significant price drop plus some good sale before even considering buying...), if only, to show my support.
Thank you CDPR, I'll be even more happy to play your game in a few months.

A beard and a couple of outfits they already have in-game footage of aren't ready for release?
This is clearly content that has been chopped out and set apart from the game, the only difference is CDPR have chosen PR over money when it comes to their DLC.

But it's absolutely pitiful how people don't recognise they have an agenda designed to increase their prominence as a game publisher.

Logistics. Especially for a game that has a physical release. Once you reach the final version, you ship said code to the factory that will press the DVDs, then package them and ship them. That will take at least a week, but closer to a month. Any content you create during that period cannot be added to the disks, even if you do release it on the same day as the game.
avatar
Lemon_Curry: What don't you expect consumers to understand?
avatar
Evilbeefjerky: That on-disc content is extra content. They will (rightfully) expect that whatever's in the game to be part of the price paid.
CDPR are billing this as something extra in order to gain consumer support.

It's clever PR, to be sure. But PR all the same.
This universal praise for a company that is clearly playing you all like fiddles makes me depressed.
Perhaps if their fake RPG was actually worth a damn I'd join you all in your elation.
But then as they say in the kingdom of the blind the one eyed man is king.

You fail at counting, considering it's still some 3 months to release and some of this "DLC" is clearly already done and in the game.

Sooo... for the price of one complete game, we get one incomplete game with DLCs (but free !) to finish it ? Hurrah. Just... hurrah.

I don't mind the real (?) fourteen add-ons which need time (?) to be done and which will be added for free but two DLCs with more skins ONE DAY after the release of the game ? Should we clap them for this EXTRAORDINARY effort and amount of work which cannot be included in the game on time ? Sure the armour and the beard will take twenty-four hours more to be added, they can't respect the deadline.

Great marketing ploy but next time, don't play with words to insult our intelligence. Still, I clap for the fourteen free DLCs if they really add value to the game and justify the fact they have not been included in it when it is released.

Irrelevant. The game has yet to be finalised and shipped. There is still time to integrate new content into the game without it having to be DLC.
They are making an issue out of this specifically for PR reasons. YOU read and understand that. Doubt that you will, since half of you don't even understand the definition of an RPG.

Those ones. They're modelled. They're done. What, do you need 3 months of bug fixing for a suit of armour?

Expecting CDPR to not do this is like expecting an hippopotamus to not be heavy.

But at some point prior you have to finish development and focus on bugfixing. You can't bugfix reliably while constantly adding new content.

Again, which ones? The quest? The extra hairstyles? The extra look for an NPC? Or the extra armor? And modelling unfortunately doesn't mean done, as many clipping problems have shown us at points.
But yes, they could possibly add them to the disks, assuming the artists are satisfied with how they look and work.

And a suit of armor does require balancing, so bug fixing for a suit of armor is quite possible.

Edit: How do you get said suit? Buy it? Complete a quest? Find it as random loot? Start with it? All of those may also add bugs to the code, so modelling it is only the start.
