Hawk52: I know there was an X-Com thread on here, but just for anyone who might be on the fence I'll give some thoughts.
I didn't discover X-Com until 2010 when I found Kikoskia's Let's Play of it. Since then I've put around 100 hours into it total, and played a bunch of spinoffs and retries.
Firaxis's X-Com is X-Com, but a simpler and in many ways more frustrating experience. The original X-Com was hard, it was dickish but it was fair. The aliens always played by the same rules, and once you knew the rules you understood it. The remake isn't like that. The remake flat out luck screws you. I've had aliens I couldn't see walk around corners knowing exactly where my soldier was, in cover, and kill them with a point blank shot. Absolutely nothing I could do. Then you have moments where the aliens will get critical shots in a row, killing even the most armored soldier you have. To me, I get the feeling that the game is out to screw me, where as the original X-Com was hard but firm in it's rules. The remake plays by it's own rules and seems to change them on the fly.
There's a whole bunch of things you can complain about mechanically such as the artificial increases in "panic" the game throws at you to simulate a world teetering, while keeping you restrained to one base which limits the global feel of the game, or the limited squad size (which makes absolutely no sense) but those issues are minor compared to how fickle the game can be.
If you enjoy modding your games, X-Com will probably be amazing in time. But given the glacial pace in patching by the devs, if you're not, I'm not sure if the game is ever going to get substantially better then it is.
That was helpful, as I was considering it. My own two cents, as I've downloaded a bunch of games to test out for buying.
Of orcs and men: the story seems interesting but the combat system feels awfull to me. It's like playing rock-paper-scissor without knowing what the opponent will choose, pretty frustrating. Might make sense if you invest enough time, but I don't feel like trying right now.
Dishonoured: The gameplay seemed real nice, but the story pretty predictable so far (just about the beginning of the 2nd mission). I think I'll get this one if there's a half decent deal.
Borderlands 2: Weird graphics style, but otherwise appears to be a decent shooter. RPG aspect seems more centered on upgrading your shooting than in exploration. I might get this one too, but it needs to be a sweet deal.
I briefly tried a bunch of others, but these were the only ones I got a definite impression of
